Given that our cars are driven by computers I'm not sure why the surprise is warranted. Turbo lag isn't even simulated at this point, is it?
Drivability is still considered to be a strong factor on certain tracks... I actually don't know most of the tracks we're running on, but from what I've gathered from track building and discussions with devs, there's an amalgamated statistic called "track sportiness" and "track drivability" which does penalise you if the sportiness of the track itself rises above 0, or has elevation changes. It's far from perfect, seeing as we don't have braking into corners and variable speed in corners, but it's there. As for turbo lag itself, I'm not entirely sure, I assumed the value was derived from the shape of the torque curve.
In this case my surprise is more due to the fact I've strayed from my usual suspension setup, which carries a massive penalty on drivability and cornering speed. I'm doing at least a good 5-6 seconds slower around Green Hell than I could be doing.
