Good idea, totally makes sense.
Like minimum safety 50 or so?

Yeah, everybody seems to go with 50, so it's a pretty good place to start. Also why not have a top speed world record attempt, there are a couple of tracks that allow this, bonneville is the most evil one cause it's not an endless stretch, but an actual 6km runway and the last km is a separate section of 1 km. We can do the maths and to find our average.

Re: AVUS Grosser Preis von Berlin 1991 [OPEN, DEADLINE FEB 1

Average speed or top speed?

Average speed = 60:00 / Lap time * 8.3km
For example, 2:00 min laptime = 249km/h average

Was actually planning to calculate average speed, but it's no different than lap time, except if you use only one sector time.

not on avus. On Bonneville. You measure the average on the last kilometer only.

I think that 50 would be too much for pre2000. It would add a lot of weight and cost if we are talking any cost restrictions. I would suggest 30 max 40.

As to Bonneville, I currently have no plans to organize competitions on other tracks. But if you want you can of course use my Excel file, you only need to put in the values.

The only thing that would somewhat interest me would be a model the special Autobahn sections that where built for record attempts. Namely Autobahn Frankfurt–Darmstadt (where Rosemeyer died) or Dessau-Bitterfeld south of Berlin. The 10km section at Dessau is particularly interesting to me because I pass there every time I leave Berlin.

There used to be a racetrack very similar to Avus.

For the unlimited class it would not matter. And if you can provide me precise numbers as to what safety "costs" extra the cost limit can be increased by that number.

But mainly that's why I resist magic numbers. If you choose one the next guy will ask why you did not choose another. On monday you will think 40 is good, then on friday you wonder why you did not use 30. Also, once people will have to increase their safety from 44.7 to 50.0, they will think this is stupid.

A simpler solution would be to require the most advanced safety in the car, leave quality at 0 or higher and nothing more. How about that?

I was bored started Dessau :) finding the track is not hard it's now part of the public Autobahn A9
Cars would take a bit of approach run on the Autobahn coming from Dessau and then have ca 9,5 km straight track ahead of them :D

There's also a "Silver State Classic Challenge" done similarly in USA, also a cool road to run top speeds. Anyways, yeah, the "advanced safety 0 quality" sounds good to me

Re: AVUS Grosser Preis von Berlin 1991 [OPEN, DEADLINE FEB 1

To that land speed record again, a 10 km track could be used to measure five categories.

1 Top Speed Record Absolute Maximum Speed
2 Standing km/Mile Split1 = Sector 1 Time
3 Standing 5km Split2 = Sector 1 Time + Sector 2 Time
4 Flying 5km = Sector 3 Time
5 Standing 10 km Total Time

Re: AVUS Grosser Preis von Berlin 1991 [OPEN, DEADLINE FEB 1

I'd say a flying 5 kilometer is a good place to go, since official land speed records are measured like that - average speed through a kilometer (well, in 2 directions but we don't have wind). We could have an average from 5 km

Re: AVUS Grosser Preis von Berlin 1991 [OPEN, DEADLINE FEB 1

The first version of Dessau was of course rubbish because it could not be used for any real land speed record attempts.

I have now updated to version 2. Splits are now exactly at 1mile (1609,344 meter) and 5 kilometer. So you can measure: standing 1 mile, standing 5km, flying 5km and standing 10km.

I hope you see what I have done. Chose standing mile over kilometer because it is longer, and perhaps imperial fans like it.

Re: AVUS Grosser Preis von Berlin 1991 [OPEN, DEADLINE FEB 1

The big question with such a thing is of course cooling. If people are allowed to run without any cooling it can make over 100 km/h difference.

I am personally against it, would leave everything so that cooling either must be 50 or sufficient (which is practically the same but perhaps can go as low as 45%).
