Re: BRC 1955 - The Golden Age [Training R3]

I saw 3rd place at one point.... at least my car did something halfway decent this year....
And then I fell like a stone.... Everyone else seems to benefit from losing fuel weight, while I get slower :\

A totally different top 8. Never expected that a single track difference could manage to do that. Monza favors top speed, which the traditional top 8 lacks in comparison. It also has relatively few tight corners.

Here are the results of the qualifying session in Monza: http://youtu.be/eO2faqfk0ys

The race will not be commented by Pyrlix or NormanVauxhall this time. Maybe I will jump in (no livestream, just commenting a Youtube video) or maybe this race will be shown without commentary only. :|

God, this competition already is running for 3 months now, I think we must finish it soon. :) But I will not start another challenge until the saving problems are gone. In the meantime I'm still working on the transition to LUA/LÖVE2D.

Dang - I underestimated how much fuel weight affects lap times here. Didn't affect me down in 32nd place, but it mixed up the top fifteen quite a bit.

I'll have to build something with a better top speed for 1965.

Getting into this in 1965, at least I'm learning lessons from the people who have participated. Use slightly more fuel, less weight, top speed, and good cornering :) Unless of course it isn't gonna be in Monza, then an entirely new strategy will need to be adapted. :P

Re: BRC 1955 - The Golden Age [Qualifying R3]

Working on my BRC 1965 cars, at least what I'm guessing it will be, and I'm only half way into 2.32. Hardly confidence inspiring so far and a bit OT I know, but I've struck new issues.

After the latest update things have gotten complicated. Re-tuning the engine, some way into a build, I started noticing weight balance gets nocked off constantly, much more so than earlier. Right now it feels like, with every slider, just one notch screws things no matter what direction and that is really infuriating. It means weight and power has to be calculated before the build in order for balance to be perfect. I have to build an engine with the perfect curves, fit it in the car, then build a new engine with the optimal weight because tuning the first one would mean messing up the balance. Brain aches. Does anyone know what I could do to moderate the effects?

One more thing. What is your opinion regarding lighter weight vs. perfect weight balance? In my experience, lighter weight always trumps.

(In the next championship my car will not have the lowest top speed ;) )

That depends on the track selection. When it comes to limited power to weight ratios, drag plays an important role in high speed races. Lighter cars will generally have better cornering speed, provided their drivability:sportiness ratio is good. But then there are those funny sweet spots that just pop up here and there which, as you've encountered, are difficult to predict and change with any change in balance.

That said, I wouldn't be concerned about a 50:50 weight distribution so much as to ensure that the suspension and grip is apportioned to the weight balance.

Thank you. I do agree, it's the sweet spots that we wan't, too bad they're so fickle. Getting past 1.30g grip is easy, but not even that automatically equates to a faster setup. Neither does looking for the lowest drag coefficient. It takes so much trial and error to find faster lap times.

If only that remained true for qualifying.

Still an 11th place qualification is not bad and I did see a top speed of around 224kph which is just ever so barely shy of my predicted 225kph top speed.

Now I just need everyone in front of me to break down.

Tell me about it! 5th in training, 13th in qualifying. Probably get wrecked out of the first race and blow an engine in the second, so......yeah.
