So what about those of us who already do have Dirt3, I wonder?

(was good fun, though the gymkhana stuff was a bit boring. Dirt2 was more excitement for the buck IMO... let's just say forcing everybody to drive Trailblazer cars through the trophy truck courses made for mad hilarious carnage  )

Re: Automation Community Racing

That's the awesome part, it's a free upgrade. I have mine on Steam so I don't know how other situations work, but you just install "Dirt 3 Complete Edition" that will be in your games library if you already own regular Dirt 3. The two versions are completely separate from each other so save games/achievements/etc won't transfer.

Re: Automation Community Racing

That's very intresting :D

Unfortunately I've no wheel, X360 pad FTW!!! I play rather often with a bunch of friends Race07 aka GTR Evolution, from SimBin (don't know if anyone played this too) with expansions the car lot it's pretty large and the physics are really nice.
With that said, it's a while that I'm vulturing around Assetto Corsa, but some friends told me that w/out a wheel it's rather unplayable, and that's the thing holding me back.
I had LFS Free, but probably I deleted it in a urge of free HDD space XD

I may download it again, but it depends on how busy I am. I hope to be able to join a race or two, I'd love torace with you guys, even if I'm more a Time Attack fanatic :D

Re: Automation Community Racing

LFS is quite playable with a gamepad, only thing I reccomend doing is, in the menu to tune a specific car's steering, to put the angle you "wheel" does lock to lock to the smallest value possible so you have decent precise control.

Also, for the small championship, there are 3 logical combinations possible in the LFS demo.

GTI on Blackwood GP
GTI on Blackwood RX
FBM on Blackwood GP

With, also, the ability to do endurance and sprint, although I think multiple 5~10 laps sprint races might be better, especially on the RX track.

An other sim I'd add in the list is the quite fun and very cheap Race 07, along with it's numerous expansion packs, one of which includes the Nurbugring.

I can't speak for any combination other than Simulation/XBOX360 pad as I've never played with any HUD on display or assists of any kind except the occasional ABS where it's original equipment for the vehicle. I will say it is very difficult to play with the XBOX360 gamepad, but not unplayable. It will take you some time to find the controller settings that work for you and those might even vary depending on the car you're driving. You MUST use L and R trigger buttons for accelerator and brake if no assists are used because you'll have to finely manipulate the two just to keep control of the car in racing situations. I'm not saying that these are flaws in the game, it's just that insanely good. The physics is incredible. Best racing simulation I've ever played by a huge margin.

On a side note, i don't have a racing wheel or anything like that, but never underestimate the potential of a keyboard! :D

your not the only one that owns it

Don't forget you can drive both XRG and XFG in demo :)
Blackwood RX with the XRG is pretty crazy

Re: Automation Community Racing

Just had the opportunity to test LFS last night, it's fantastic fun, with a good (and still developing) physics modelling. If you're an Automation nerd who likes to play with the suspension settings and look at bump graphs, there's also the option to further tweak your car settings in a more advanced fashion with live telemetry and force graphs, so you can check tyre temperatures, suspension loadings, brake performance, clutch wear etc. etc. (it takes a bit of navigation so check the forum guides on how to access these features). Tuning is well worth your time, as it can make you up to a good 5% faster if you make an optimal tune for your driving style.

Multiplayer is quite easy to access too, with the ability to jump in and out mid-race if the game allows it. All you need is somebody to connect on, or if you don't care who to play it with, just join any room. Since I'm across the pond from most of us here, I had a bit of lag issues which made wheel-to-wheel racing a bit more like wheel-to-wheel banging as I couldn't tell the precise position of nearby cars, but other than that, very accessible.

Re: Automation Community Racing

Ok, did a couple of laps and had great fun :D

Only thing that bothers me is that i wasn't able to find a way to adjust the steering dead zone, so on the main straight i was constantly snaking around...any hints?

Re: Automation Community Racing

I gave LFS a go. I didn't care for it. I'm going to pass on this one. I'm willing to try some of the others if enough people get on board, though.

Yesterday a bunch of us on IRC got together and messed about on LFS, was a lot of fun, especially taking out the Formula BMW out on the Blackwood Rallycross track  . Arms hurt like crazy after all of that countersteering. Was very exciting. Hope to see lots of you there tonight!
