Cooling Questions

Hey guys, quick question, I tend to build my cars with extra cooling airflow for more reliability and I try to "simulate" having AC installed, does anyone know what an average kJ/s would be for an AC system? As in how much extra I need to add on top of just engine cooling. I usually add about 3-10 kJ/s to my cars that come equipped with AC but am not sure if this is an accurate amount. I cant see it being TOO high since we arent removing much heat from a system (comparatively) but am curious none the less.

Re: Cooling Questions

I'd say it varies with car, but it can't be that much.

Re: Cooling Questions

I would say add 5-10 hp worth of cooling, with the ac on it adds extra load to the engine.

Re: Cooling Questions

As I know nothing about cars ( :P ) but quite a bit about physics, I would say that the effective cooling power required by a car is related to its passenger cabin area and windscreen size. The solar constant is 1.36 kW / m^2, so a car with an average-sized windscreen would need very roughly 3 kW effective cooling power I would think.

Re: Cooling Questions

If it is a car with a large entertainment system? Maybe some of the newer cars with screens and computers everywhere in the cabin. And how much is a normal person emitting in heat?

Re: Cooling Questions

A normal person at rest is emitting something like 60-100W I think.
