The Derecho! Even though it is a naturally aspirated and carbureted V8 I think it makes decent power.

After having 8 successful entries, I can say that the average level of the inscriptions is much higher in comparison with the first ATCC season.

Experimenting a bit with an engine in engine builder. I can get power no problem and I can get reliability. Both together proves to be a challenge. *sigh*

I did encounter some strange phenomenon though: Raising power just slightly at 257,5kW (~350HP) looses me about 10 points in reliability. No matter if it happens through boost, compression, timings or any quality slider. Even lowering the fuel quality and making the engine knock and thus dropping power below that threshold results in an actual rise of reliability. That can't be right.

Save the design, put it in a car and add extra cooling, finish tuning from the car builder.

That was the plan, at least until I got sidetracked by unexpected behavior. Although I'm somewhat afraid the extra cooling approach to raise reliability may prove to be problematic since the turbo engines need such a lot of cooling it already takes quite a toll on aerodynamic. Guess it can't be helped though, I'm currently stuck at about 300kW as well, without dropping below 30 reliability, and I may be inexperienced but I can see that's not nearly enough compared to NA, given the one I did for comparison has more output without even really trying and I don't know if I'd be able to get it below 30 reliability even if I want to.

Well, there were no grilles, vents or a car at all since I started with the new engine button. Seems the engine builder acts a bit erratic without a car present. Thought it would just simulate an engine testing environment but it looks like it would be best to make an 'engine test car', aka largest possible engine bay and plastered with huge grilles, to get reliable results if you just want to work on an engine.

AFAIK in the engine builder the reliability is affected by the power/displacement ratio, but that's not the case in the car builder.

It does seem to behave differently, I've never really worked it out myself. I just build any old platform with a ton of cooling to get the real figure for now.

AFAIK the reliability figures in engine builder alone will eventually be calculated independent of cooling.

If I am not mistaken, this lack of cooling issue comes from the days before the car designer. Back then, we didn't know how cooling would affect the engine's reliability, therefore it is assumed a maximum cooling of 100 kj per litre, after that the engine starts to have reliability problems. Since you have a turbocharged engine, this problem is more evident.

To work around that currently, I select the body I would like to use, flare out the wheel arches and just put a gigantic grille onto it. After I'm finished with wheels, offset and engine size, I'll go back to the body to morph and design it properly.

OK, finally finished. It took way longer than expected because of running into several dead ends with the car and a crash just after thinking just some fine tuning and it will do.

Here is the QSA AF8.40T ATCC, quite a grilled edition, just couldn't get enough cooling.



Here the main dead end. Had to find out there are not many 4 door sedan bodies for the 1980s (or none for longitudal AWD, didn't check if that's the fault). I wasn't happy with neither the looks or performance. Still it took me ages to realize I morphed away the Sedan looks anyway so why don't use one of these 5 door then.



If there's ever a 1990s+ retro car ATCC or something in the 1960s I might come back to it. Somehow it got plenty of cooling though.
