Engine Types forever!

My apologies - it's late and I don't have much wit in me (and I may have missed a previous thread in my quick scan) - what of these engine types do you figure will be implemented in the game?

-Inline, V, W, flat, etc...
-Wankel rotary
-Electric (solar?)
-Hybrid
-Gas turbine
-Steam
-compressed air/flywheel power
-Fuel types - gas (octane levels?), diesel, hydrogen, ethanol
-2/4/alternative cycle?

Speaking of alternatives, what about CVT for transmission?

With a game like Automation, it has so much potential and possibilities and from that fact feature creep comes in.

Feature creep is the constant addition of features to a game during its production and thus never actually releases.
So we have pretty much locked down what is in, and what is out of the game.

Features Included At Launch

Engines

The ability to design engines based on the following configurations:

Inline 3, 4, 5, and 6
V6, V8, V10 and V12
Flat 4 and Flat 6

Either Naturally Aspirated, Turbo, Twin Turbo, or Supercharged.

Gearboxes

Choice of various gearboxes, 3/4/5/6-speed etc., synchro and no synchro.
Sequential Manual.
Automatics etc.
(Undecided on CVT)

Adjustment of final drive (but not individual ratios)

Various Clutch types
Various Differential Types.

The ability to design a broad selection of cars.

With engine placements at front, middle, rear.
Front wheel, rear wheel and all wheel drive configurations.
Different suspension types.
Various types of brake.
Manipulable car body shapes.
Various fixtures, e.g. head lamps, tail lights, door handles.
Different cargo space configurations.

What we want to the game to have eventually:

Lots of cool engines:
W8, W12, W16, W18
Wankel Rotaries
Flat 8
Inline 8
V4
Two Strokes
Hybrids
Electric

Motorsport Series:
Run various production and non production motorsport teams.

Re: Engine Types forever!

Would it be easier to make the engines modular? I.E, be able to join pairs together to get to the weirder configurations without actually modelling every engine?

Well, what about sounds and animation then? I do not think if it would be easier.

Oh god no, far easier to make them properly, however there is a lot of resuse of existing art assets when when we make the different assets

What, no Flintstones engine on your list?

Id love to play with a steam powered car just for the heck of it (not that it would be worth the time probably, just an amusing thought).

the time will show us if we see the V16. :)

If we ever do this, we want to do it properly, and build
a top quality simulator. This is hard and expensive to do, so will only happen if we are very successful.

Your car will get banned immediately because of road safety and emission issue.

Edit : Especially when you don't care what sort of suspension should be use.

Re: Engine Types forever!

Even though they're not listed, I'd like to see something like Volkswagen's staggered inline/narrow-V VR series engines in the game. Other than that, they seem to have a pretty complete list if you count the "hopefuls". I just hope they get Wankels in and offer 2 and 3 rotor options.

edit: Actually, will we be able to choose the angle of V engines? That would really open some options up.

In a word, No.
It would require at lot of art that can dynamically change when you change angle.

Also Lancia made a "VR" engine way before VW :ugeek:

Re: Engine Types forever!

While it may not be a popular sentiment, I wouldn't care if the art reflected the angle of the V, as long as the behavior of the engine did.

And I never claimed VW invented the idea, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a more mainstream example of the concept. ;)

Re: Engine Types forever!

Nah, we really try and avoid simulating changes that we can't display.

We already don't show bore and stroke changing, but we'd rather avoid having anything else like that.

We will at some point in the future add narrow angle V engines though, probably the same time we do rotaries
