Race Four: Spa

Here we have the results for the forth round of the ATCC.
As always, the competition has been very strict among the competitors.

Image

This time, one of the front runners had to come out on top and the standings reflect that.

Stat comparison
This time we are comparing the price, this hasn't got a direct relation with the cars performance, but it can show how much time has been spent on tweaking.
Strop made it as close as he could to the maximum price, which means he must have spent an awful lot of time doing his car, and the results are paying off. Rileybanks and Pleb on the other hand must have knocked the car together in 5 minutes, while in Pleb's case, spending 30 on the appearance.

Can confirm, car was not tested extensively. It would ruin the character! :P

Re: Automation Touring Car Championship [Race Four Results]

I'm honestly surprised by how well I'm doing. My car has below-average performance yet I'm still managing to squeeze in the top third. I am pleased with this :)

Re: Automation Touring Car Championship [Race Four Results]

Yep, I can confirm I spent straight up 4 hours (over three days) on the tuning of this car. I specifically wanted to build a Holden Gemini with the highest power to weight ratio, but seeing the competition, I also wanted to see how good I could make it! So far so good but incredibly tight contest!

PS Leo, on your spreadsheet it appears you may have given pyrlix an extra point. Don't ban me please! :P

Re: Automation Touring Car Championship [Race Four Results]

It took me about 4-5 hours to make the car, including the time spent watching these explanatory videos. I was looking for a more modern and improved Oldtimer/Motor City for quite some time now and, lacking any tycoon part, it was literally this competition that made me buy this game now instead of just keeping it on my watchlist. Figured it can't get any worse than last and it gives a set of rules/framework and purpose to dive into the car builder.

I honestly feel pleased reading that, I am so glad that this thing I set up made you buy the game :D

Having seen your car there is one very important thing I would change, the tyres. You have used way too large rims, which limit the maximum tyre width. A good option for tuning would be to settle on the tyre size first, then make the wheels as big as possible (if you want so, because doing it isn't important).

Other than that, your car is pretty good for a first time entry.

Re: Automation Touring Car Championship [Race Four Results]

I actually did set the tyre width first which is only limited by the car because I edited the body to go along with the max tyre width set by the rules. Although after discovering there are spacers available to increase the track width it didn't occur to me to change the body to test if the wider track or less frontal area gives the better results. After that I made the tyres as big as possible with the reasoning to allow bigger rims to allow bigger brake discs with still enough tyre left to help suspension. Again it didn't occur to me that the game might not take fading in race like conditions into account and we just do one standing round at each track anyway and therefore I might just have added unnecessary weight by doing so.

Re: Automation Touring Car Championship [Race Four Results]

Interestingly enough, bigger brakes don't necessarily mean better braking performance, as indicated by both the times and the braking distance! What is most important is first sufficient braking power, but once that's achieved, it's probably actually the front-rear braking bias. What I've found more recently is that, at least in this build, maxxing out the disc size rarely makes for faster times around the track.

What Leo's saying about the tyres is actually the profile (the ratio of your sidewall height to the width of the wheel). Larger rims on the same size wheels means a lower profile, but there's a minimum profile for each tyre, otherwise it just won't structurally hold up (and this depends on the tech year). So if you had smaller rims, that would increase the profile of the tyre, which allows you to use wider wheels. When it comes to the driving wheels, wider is generally better, because it means more contact with the ground and better power, and when it comes to lap times, that's probably more important than sufficient brake size, because really, most of the cars here are pretty light and don't need huge brakes anyway. Besides, stopping fast is not that useful if the car doesn't go fast to begin with :P

Re: Automation Touring Car Championship [Race Four Results]

I wasn't even thinking about braking power, once the brakes exceed the ability of the tyres you can't improve here, but the longevity, aka how much abuse the brakes can take until they start to loose stopping power, bigger discs can store and dissipate more heat plus generating less because they provide a bigger lever for the force applied by the pads. All quite useless here.

There's something quite wrong with this car. Just played around with tyres and it achieved the best times on Automation track by applying the largest possible 21" rims even it reduces tyre width from 215 to 185. I can't make any sense out of that.
Edit: OK, something went wrong. Seems the best time I found yet is 215 with 19" rims with this general setup.
