Re: Have you ever being insulted because of a car you like/d

I remember when i had my BMW E36 320i. It was arctic grey, had M package with a little spoiler on the back, and a Remus exhaust.

It was a car that split people into two groups basically, and interestingly enough both had kind of the same arguments but used them in different ways. One part saw the car as a highly valuable object, they thought it was gonna be super expensive (it cost me like 4k) and that i had to be rich (which i clearly wasn't and still am not) to be able to afford it with all the running costs etc. Then there was the other group which said it was a wast of money because of all the running costs such as fuel, insurance and so on, and they also said it was too loud, that you can't use all its power here in austria and that it would be impractical (lol. That's why the E36 sold so well, because it was hopelessly impractical [/sarcasm]). This group included my parents. Until they sat in the driver seat for the first time. At that point, they realized what makes a BMW so good and why i wanted this car.

Re: Have you ever being insulted because of a car you like/d

I've been insulted because of our mustang, something which I found kinda silly. It was always a friend in an Eclipse, our neighbor in a civic, or a random guy on the street in some tuner or modern muscle. It really bothered me for a while; my dad never would take them up on it for a while. Then one of my friends was trying to mess with me, and we got into a fight. We ended up both pretty much losing, and then our parents had to come pick us up from swim practice. My dad got into an argument with his (mine drove our mustang here and his dad drove his 96 eclipse gsx) as the other dad told his son "shame on you for stooping to the level of someone who throws their money away into a slow ass gas guzzler." My dad just looked at him and said "if this car is slow, what does that make yours?" He said fast. My dad just shrugged and walked to the car with me. As we were driving away, he pulled up next to us, laughed, and said look how crappy that car is. He tried to blow us way at the light. Not a chance.

Re: Have you ever being insulted because of a car you like/d

For the 3 years before I bought my Hyundai my corolla was pretty much falling apart. the rear bumper was taped and tied on, the head light glass was mostly just tape, the doors were rusted, the exhaust was rotted the rear brakes didn't really work and the shocks were shot. But every morning the engine turned on it drove me through a bunch of pretty severe winter storms, returned 45mpg anddI'd seen 6 cars dtiven by friends suffer catastrophic failure and be totaled. So what if everyone laughed at her I kept that cat running when I didn't have the money for a new one and she saved me so much more both at the pump and in insurance over my friend's much newer cars.

Re: Have you ever being insulted because of a car you like/d

Heh, people used to make fun of me for driving a Dodge Caravan in college. But when you're 6 foot 3 inches, sub-compact and compact cars get tiny real quick. Seeing as I have long arms and legs, it made more sense for me to get something that was a little bigger. So I opted for something that was more practical, sure I could've gotten an SUV, but insurance was cheaper on the van (by about $600 per year).

That being said, guess who came asking me for a lift to off-campus events or after parties? Those same people who made fun of me. I got the last laugh and told them that they could walk. My friends may have poked fun by saying that I drove a minibus, but they were never rude about it.

So don't worry, you're not the only who's been through this. But you still have a while to go yet before worrying about cars. But as others have said, friends don't insult friends over their choice of ride.

Re: Have you ever being insulted because of a car you like/d

I guess it is non-sense, teenagers always find stupid things to mock others about. It isn't your fault for liking those cars at all, nor, I am inclined to say, theirs. They also feel the need to be accepted by others and one good way of doing so is to annoy someone who has different tastes. Ignore them because almost certainly they don't have any idea on what they are talking about.

About the comment above, I am 1,90m tall (6'3") and have started driving recently. For the time being, I am using my moms Clio to run around. A friend of mine said to me that it was the first time he saw someone bigger than a car. :)

Is that your car? If it is, I must admit you have a great looking car! It seems very well taken care of, and the color is great!

Obviously not that was the model i had but i didn't have a picture of it so i just took one from the interwebs. The colour was the same though!
You can get one of these for about 16 000 € right now. ATM i have the "big brother or new version of it" the new v40.
But hey thanks anyway!
I also got a bit ridiculed for having a seat altea as my first car, which i had for about a year.

Re: Have you ever being insulted because of a car you like/d

Driving my Saxo 1.1i, and of course having that on the side of the car, I had this guy with a Porsche giving me an eye and then smiled arrogantly at me. Heck, I just came up that road 10 minutes ago and was heading home now. I started revving my engine a bit, trying to get him to race me. And yes, like a hungry snapper he bit. The light turned green, I kicked it as hard as I could and so did he. Was I going to win this race? No, ofcourse not. Did I win? Yes, ofcourse I did, by being sneaky. I accelerated to 50 km/h and then stopped. He pulled off watching his mirror, not knowing 200 metres ahead, the police had set up a speedtrap... :D

He must have been doing atleast 100 km/h on this 50 km/h road. Over here, thats like a 300 euro fine. Good game, bro.

Re: Have you ever being insulted because of a car you like/d

Some guys on the local petrol station (where i currently work) were making fun of my Golf because it's a Diesel and they didn't believe it has 120hp. Then, i invited one of them to sit in the passenger seat with me driving. Of course, i put the pedal to the metal, and his face was like this:
