That's what I don't really get, why does it scale with footprint? Someone either looks for a large car or a small car, I'm not sure how "how much it fits for it's size" metric is useful. Narrow roads, easy parking or something like this? But then what really matters is footprint alone.

It is an all-in-one stat for general usefulness of the car. And yes, it is considering footprint for easy parking and city maneuverability. The calculation is: utility = constant * totalVolumes / footprint * widthFactor * seats * loadCapacity * factorTorqueIntegral * powerToWeight
Of course it needs balancing!

Re: CTC - Car Tycoon Challenge #3 [WAIT FOR RESULTS]

Though to play devil's advocate for keeping small cars having decent utility...

I used to be a salesman at a local Ford dealership for a while during the recession (out of necessity, not choice). This was right as Ford released the Transit Connect in the US.

Before that, we were MAYBE selling 1 or 2 E-series vans a month. Maybe. And more often than not those were used, not new.

When the Transit Connect became available, I think we ordered something like 10. We sold every single one of them in less than a month, and had a growing wait list... kinda sent us scrambling to come up with more because management didn't anticipate their popularity.

And it didn't slow down from there. There are plenty of delivery and mobile service industries out there where a compact van is MUCH more useful than a full-size truck-based van. Smaller vans might be used by medical or auto parts couriers, computer techs, florists, etc... while a full size van would be useful to a plumber or a parcel service contractor, or even a retirement or convalescence home (large passenger van).

Does the utility score need balancing? Yup. Does a large vehicle automatically have more utility than a small one? Nope. And that's also why different groups have different weights for utility as far as buying preference, with Transport obviously needing the most.

Re: CTC - Car Tycoon Challenge #3 [WAIT FOR RESULTS]

Yeah I guess it makes sense, just needs some balancing. Still larger cars should have larger running cost, it's another way to balance that, well whatever works I guess.

I have to ask though, why do you think Killrob is the devil?

Re: CTC - Car Tycoon Challenge #3 [RESULTS]

As I said, his time some things didn't work out as intended. But the overall tendency still is alright, just the winner is a bit too outstanding. That's because of some Automation-related problems and of course because of some flaws on my side. Overall the supercars have been doing way too good because they got too many of the trackday customers. I promise this will not happen again. :) The in-game problems (too high sportiness possible) have already been communicated with and solved by the devs. So this challenge actually helps balancing the overall game. :) The challenge-related issues will be taken care of. I'll probably switch to another, more robust and simple sales model, which won't reward extremes that much and will work more in a linear fashion, similar to like the car scenarios do. Nevertheless, here are the results!

Here are some random stats and extremes which show the insanity going on this time: :D

Just as I expected my car did not do so well. I dont think I will use that score thing in the future as it was clearly harmful to my design.

Re: CTC - Car Tycoon Challenge #3 [RESULTS]

Personally very pleased with the result even despite the balancing issue in track day/supercar segment. Met my target (to make a profit equal to or greater than the engineering costs), plus managed to pick a price point not far off the optimum, and nearly sold out. Not surprised at mer_at and xwing's performance in the sector, but satisfied that the little guy was able not just to survive but thrive in that competitive market!

I'd be happy to help testing the new balance of track/supercar for next round :P truth be told I basically built for lap times (made 1:15 around Airfield) for whatever I thought I could afford lol. Thanks for running the challenge!

Re: CTC - Car Tycoon Challenge #3 [RESULTS]

yikes....got my first top 3 results and then no profit.... handmade alu shelf and the high price broke my neck :? or the 'low' pice of 100.000 $.

would be interesting how the result would be if all cars would use the suggested optium price tag. maybe a nice feature for the next round, if it isn't too complex.

Re: CTC - Car Tycoon Challenge #3 [RESULTS]

Ehhh... I under priced my car too much, oh well I'll take #1 market share consolation prize I guess, family-rally-hatch for everyone! Actually .. since both cars ahead of me are super cars that sold well in track day, which shouldn't happen according to Der Bayer ... huh, apply enough twisted logic and whaddya know I actually won this thing!
More seriously well deserved win and profit for xwing and mer.at.

EDIT: Yay I sold more cars than I can produce, another rounding error I guess.

Re: CTC - Car Tycoon Challenge #3 [RESULTS]

*crash and burn*

Guessing my main problem this time was TOO big of a factory. Looks like I was very close to my best price point for this vehicle (hard to tell because of the resolution of my screen). Oh and I probably also grossly overestimated the number of offroad buyers. That probably didn't help.

Re: CTC - Car Tycoon Challenge #3 [RESULTS]

xwing's car would have done really good even without Trackday customers, it just wouldn't have been so overpowered. :)

Optimum price tag round is easy to do, yes. But the optimum price tag only is somewhat correct for a single player as long as all of the other prices stay the same. So it just would mix up everything and no pricetag would be perfect again.

Re: CTC - Car Tycoon Challenge #3 [RESULTS]

This time it went just as I expected. I'm glad I submitted the offroad instead of the SC. Xwing had a very good car. No one went for the true offroads. I sized my factory just right.
