Re: OHV - 3 and 4 valves?

Well, I would think they are not practical because of how the valves are actuated from the cam. OHV is a lot more complex than OHC, because there are a LOT of moving parts per valve. I can't think of a mainstream, mass-production multi-OHV engine. I'm sure there are some out there, however. I just haven't seen one.

I've only ever seen it used on a few diesels, presumably where low RPM means a heavy and complex valvetrain isnt so bad.

Re: OHV - 3 and 4 valves?

Cummins and Scania (diesel, both) are the only ones I know that uses ohv 4 valve heads.

For gasoline engines, aftermarket stuff only. :(

Many famous muscle cars like the Camaro and Corvette (I would list Mustangs, Challengers, Chargers, etc. but they all switched to DOHC or SOHC). Pretty much every GM, Ford, or Ram pickup uses OHV because of its known low-end torque, high reliability, and low maintenance/build costs.

I've only heard of 12-Valve Cummins.? For petrol (I like that word...), Ford's 5.0L Mustang engine was standard a 32-Valve pushrod engine. There are a few known engines out there that prove it to be a pretty good valve configuration.

Actually, Ford's 6.7L diesel engine is a 32-Valve OHV engine that has a maximum shift point of 3200 RPM, which is above the average for even pickup diesels.

Re: OHV - 3 and 4 valves?

Ford has never made a OHV 32 valve engine.

You are confusing the 2 different 5.0 engines.

The old one is just a uppdated 302 with serpentine belt drive and fuel injection.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Windsor_engine

The new 5.0 is from the Modular engine family, 3 valve SOHC or 4 valve DOHC engines.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Modular_engine

As for the 24 valve Cummins.

Yes, they have. The Powerstroke is Ford's engine and it's a 32-Valve Pushrod diesel.

EDIT: Also, I NEVER trust Wikipedia because people can edit it freely. Not saying you're wrong, but I don't trust Wikipedia. I have in fact seen 32-Valve OHV 5.0L engines and from what the owner said they were all stock.

Re: OHV - 3 and 4 valves?

I've never seen an OHV 32v Petrol V8 from the factory. The 6.0, 6.4 and 6.7 Powerstroke Diesel V8s are all 4 valve though, and you can happily find lots of pictures of the heads and the valve arrangement
