Box/Square Engines?

It would be interesting to see some box/square configuration engines at some point, as they are pretty common in small econ-oriented cars. So will they be coming in the future? :)

Re: Box/Square Engines?

I think this would be a great idea. Then we would be able to make hatchbacks like the Subaru outback!

Re: Box/Square Engines?

The Outback is an Estate, not a hatchback. You are thinking of the Impreza.

Re: Box/Square Engines?

Here to explain more:

Image

An estate or stationwagon, has 4 roofsupports, namely, the A, B, C and D.
The Impreza is actually a sedan(or saloon). (Talking about the WRX rally-look-a-like. There is an Impreza stationcar, though.
Image

The difference between a hatchback and a sedan(saloon), is that a hatchback actually has the back as a door or 'hatch', where the sedan(saloon) has an additional part of the car sticking out, but without the D roof support.

There are exceptions of course, e.g. Mk3 European Ford escort 3dr Hatch and Estate variants with only A, B & C pillars ;)

Re: Box/Square Engines?

Just like a Mazda 3 MPS. YEs thats a hatchback. An upscaled and more spacious one, but it is a hatchback.

Actually, that is also an exception. They call it an estate, but it clearly is just an upsized hatchback.

Re: Box/Square Engines?

I think you could pretty much find a vehicle that would break any "rule" you care to define. IMO a car is what the manufacturers say it is and is accepted as such by the buying public.

Original Mini = Sedan/Saloon, no sticky out bit (ignoring Riley & Wolesley variants)
Escort example above = one is hatch the other estate despite both meeting the "hatch rule"
Skoda Rapid, has a sticky out bit like a sedan/saloon, but is a hatchback
