transmission

another one by me, and also not directly about the engine designer, sry.

anyway, manual transmission will be a given i think, but automatical?

right my questions:

1) manual TM with 2 to 6 gears, or just to 5?

2) automatical from 2 to 7 (Merc S / BMW 7) or 8 gears (Rolls Royce iirc), or less?

3) thats a longer one

automatical: the standard one is a given (with question 2^^) but eg. VW has 2 other concepts.

a) DSG, which is basically 2 clutches in one. Clutch A is hollowed out an responsible for the gears 2,4,6, Clutch B is in the hollowed part of A and for Gears R,1,3,5.

So if Clutch A opens due to a shift, and at the same time clutch B closes, meaning there isnt a pause in acceleration.

(cant find it atm in the english wiki)

b) Multitronic (most of the time with audi cars)

Here u dont really have a clutch. The engine turns a cone, which is connected to another cone (pointing in the opposite direction) by a chainband. Now the position of the chain upon those cones determines the transmission ratio, which enables a real seamless change of ratio.

will they be implemented?

Re: transmission

On the subject of Transmissions, Im wondering how much customization we will have. Will it just be how many gears, or will we have some adjustment to gear ratios?

It’s probably better to use the non-VW term DCT (Dual Clutch Transmision) instead of DSG. Because the days were you had to buy a VAG car to get a DCT is long gone

Again the Multitronic is just the VAG name for CVT gearboxes and they have been around long before VAG started to make Multitronic gearboxes, example DAF.

Re: transmission

Overtime you can research and unlock different gear boxes and clutches. Maybe in 1946 you may only have access to 2 and 3 speed gearboxes with no syncro's, do the amazingly sophisticated modern gearboxes.

At the moment for gear ratios, probably just a final drive adjustment between

TopSpeed/Economy to Acceleration/Sportyness

That all sounds good to me.

As much as I like detail, I don't think I would really want to set all the ratios for every car... The final drive adjustment sounds like the perfect solution.

AFAIK especially since one would have to take the diameter of the wheels (Rim and tire together) into account, since the ratios give the number of turns of the engines crank at the clutch to the number of turns of the wheel, meaning same ratio and smallerwheels means less speed...

Re: transmission

We can happily make final drive take into account the wheel size.

If you modify and existing car design, and change the wheel size, it could warn that this will change the output, or you pay the cost to retool the gearbox manufacturing.

Re: transmission

I would have to see how the final game setup would be before I would be able to judge what would be more appropriate for me. I like the idea of all the options but if it is just way to complicated final drive ratio and wheel/tire size would still be a great option as far as I am concerned.
