I understand all about area under the curve. I wanted to get 200hp out of a production style 1.6 with 1992 tech. It's 125 hp/L naturally aspirated... it was always going to be peaky as hell. I could probably have hit my hp target with a slightly more conservative cam and a little more rpm and gotten a slightly fuller power curve, but I was hitting the point of deteriorating lifespan at 8700 rpm. I could have done it by throwing fuel at the engine, but I wanted a hot hatch motor so I needed to keep the efficiency reasonable, so the AFR is only at ~13.6:1. I could have used race headers and backed off on the cam but I made the motor with a production mindset. And like any production engine, it's full of compromises, but I really wanted a 200 hp 1.6.

As for not being enjoyable, that's debatable. I for one enjoy beating the snot out of an engine.
