1996 STCC [Closed, except if waiting for approval]

Touring cars have always fascinated me since childhood (because the cars look like dad's cars), and therefore, I am hosting a tournament based on the 1996 (first season) Swedish Touring Car Championship. :) To make it fair (i.e. prevent everyone from choosing the same compact car and thus killing all creativity), the rules are modified somewhat. I want the cars to be creative, and thus the rules are lenient:

Tournament has opened. Feel free to register a car. Registration will stop the 21. of Novermber or when we have reached 15 cars.

General rules:

- You can only use vanilla content (open beta is ok) or stuff that's on Steam (using the now obsolete mod pack is not allowed)
- No cheating by messing with the .LUA values (this goes without saying)
- Tech year should be 1996; this goes for body, engine and running gear
- Cars have to look like 1996 middle-class cars. That means no early 1980's FIATs, no 2010s style LED lights and so on. Cars that do not look like 1996 cars will be disqualified
- As this is my first tournament, results will be based on lap times
- If a rule is not written, it does not exist
- No restrictions on costs, as these can make the tournament very homogeneous. A mid-size sedan with full quality sliders is a little over 150,000 dollars, in other words: it's a lot cheaper than a genuine STCC car
- No restrictions on mileage of fuel consumption
- Massive spoilers, front lips, engine scoops, vents and so on are not only allowed -- they are encouraged

Engine rules:

- VVT and VVL is allowed (whether you choose this or 5 valves per cylinder is up to you)
- Minimum reliability of 45
- Max size is 2 liters
- NA engines only
- Has to be either 4 or 6 cylinders. Both I6 or V6 engines can be used
- No restrictions on horsepowers or anything else, but remember that low-end performance can be just as important as power. The 1996 Ford Mondeo STCC car had 30 more horsepowers than the Audi A4, while carrying less weight. It didn't win nearly as much
- No muffler required
- Racing exhaust is allowed

Body rules:

- Minimum weight of 975 kg (this is again to prevent everyone from entering the same compact car)
- No restrictions on suspension or material
- AWD, RWD and FWD are all allowed. Choose wisely; FWD cars are lighter, but will be less sporty
- Four door sedans or five door estates/hatchbacks only
- Minimum length of 410 cm excluding spoilers
- The car has to look road legal (i.e. headlights, door handles, and so on)

Further rules:

- Minimum quality for interior is 0
- Sport interior only
- Driving assists are permitted, but remember that these add weight to the car
- Minimum safety is 65

If possible, there will also be a poll on who has the best looking car after the race.

Re: 1996 STCC [Rule discussion]

The rules seem good to me, however the cars won't be really balanced, I reckon there will be big disparities between the front runners and the slower cars. But if that isn't a concern of yours, and it wouldn't be one of mine, thumbs up.

Re: 1996 STCC [Rule discussion]

I think that no cost limit it's a bit... meh... i don't like the idea. Everyone will submit a carbon fiber V6 AWD car with +15 quality everywhere.

Everything else looks fine to me.

Re: 1996 STCC [Rule discussion]

I'm going nuts over that maximum displacement... But that's probably just me being American. Also, No safety restrictions? Can I make my car a screaming metal death trap?

I'd also ban carbon fiber to make th race cars closer to their street brethren, but this is just a suggestion.

Re: 1996 STCC [Rule discussion]

The safety rules Will be added. Carbon fiber is allowed due to the fact that you can't make two seat versions of most sedans. The no cost rule is there due to the fact that people tend to choose the same 1980's compacts in every race, which punishes anyone who chooses something else. Moreover, STCC, WRC and so on has expensive cars; they're not ordinary cars who simply have 300-ish horsepowers.

Generally, the engine rules will prevent you from making anything too powerful.

350HP is quite believeable...... above 400 is very unlikely even for strop

in 10 minutes, i managed to scratched up an engine that makes 320HP@9500 and 276Nm@7500 with usable power from 6kRPM and up to 10k

*in case you read this. no strop, this isn't a challenge for you.

Re: 1996 STCC [Rule discussion]

Strop is welcome as well. :) I feel that the engine constraints are strict enough. If I set a maximum cost of eg. 30,000 USD, everyone would make the same Peugeot 306-ish car, while the two poor souls making something else would lose the race -- thus making this yet another compact car race. The only feasible alternative I could think of, is to limit the race to four door sedans and estates with a length of more than 435 cm.

An STCC engine is 25,000 pounds alone.

Re: 1996 STCC [Rule discussion]

I can't remember if there's MPFI in 1996. I get the feeling there isn't, so that'll be a major limiting factor.

Of course one could go mechanical but geeze the costs...

Also there's a bit of uniqueness to the balance of these rules. I'll be giving it a shot for sure.

MPFI is available in 1996.
