It's a bit late to run the next race on May 10th. I think you've used the header from race 3 there.

Little do we know that the automation team invented a time machine in their spare time. Quite a wondrous device.

Re: BRC - Out of the Steam - 1945 [Race 5 Training]

Thanks to everyone who participated and of course to the commentators! You really make this challenge something special! It was a pleasure to host this competition and I'm motivated to improve the simulation.

Just a quick overview on what is planned in the near and far future and some very big undertakings:
  • Pressure system: drivers make more errors depending on how close the following car is
  • Porting the simulation from Matlab to LUA/LÖVE2D for faster simulation times (at least less than 8h per race) and prettier videos (maybe even with some background sound effects, simulated engine sounds should be hard)
  • a proper gas/brake pedal controller
  • yellow flags and safety cars
  • pit stops (maximum fuel tank size, estimating time loss with worn out tyres -> tyre changes, damage repairs)
  • far future: good AI, considering track width and actual lateral movement over the track, maybe even full scale driver model for longitudinal and lateral control (prototypes for each individual direction already exist, they "just" have to be combined)
  • whatever else comes to mind
  • your ideas

Re: BRC - Out of the Steam - 1945 [Final Race Results]

Thank you Der Bayer for all the time and effort that's gone in to running these competitions. As others have said it's added a huge amount extra to the game.

Also, thanks to all the commentators, I really enjoyed watching the races on twitch.

The planned features are ambitious but would add so much to the system. Definitely not the time or the place for a suggestions thread, but weather conditions could be an interesting dynamic; particularly for longer races. Hotter tracks would be more demanding on low reliability engines and on tyre wear, rain could increase chances of driver error and so on.

Re: BRC - Out of the Steam - 1945 [Final Race Results]

This was an excellent experience overall, especially considering it was a first time running type of competition that adds so much to the game.

Just to let you guys know (and Martin again), the devs do support this type of racing challenge and you wanting to switch to LUA would bring the simulation closer to being implemented into the game. Our very rough and preliminary plans would probably be interesting to hear for you too: we would like to implement the single-car driving simulation Martin uses into Automation before Automation 1.0. As we've said in the past, we are considering making a racing team manager / designer expansion after the game is done and if Martin continues improving this stuff the way he currently does, we would probably be able to base it on his calculations, making him part of the developer team for the expansion and giving him a (significant) cut of any profits coming out of it once done. :)

So this challenge / race series is even a bit more serious that it already appears: it may very well be the first rough implementations of what could be an expansion for Automation.

A big thank you from the dev team to all people involved making this into what it is.
Cheers!
/Robert

Re: BRC - Out of the Steam - 1945 [Final Race Results]

Yes, definitely very exciting, even though my car still sucks! hahaha

Thank you for ALL of the hard work to Der Bayer and all of the announcers and competitors for a really great experience.

(I still cannot believe my pushrods failed in the last race.....WTF?!?!? hahaha)

I'm really looking forward to the 1955 season, though my car still sucks apparently. It's all good though, as long as it stays fun, right? :)
