BRC: Shakedown Challenge [FINISHED]

Hey guys,

I plan to host a series of rallye challenges based on randomly generated rallye stages. Therefore I have written a random rallye track generator (in Matlab), which produces track files according to specific settings.

The participants will have to build cars (fulfilling some technical requirements) and send me the .lua files (in a PM) before the rallye starts. I will participate myself, but with a weight penalty of +100 kg. After the entry deadline has passed, I will make a post with an overview of all the participants. After that, I will run them in the Automation track simulation, note down their times and keep you updated on the forums about the standings after each rallye stage (one stage per day).

The first rallye, which is just a test of the system, will consist out of 3 stages. Future challenges will be longer (probably 6 stages). I will show an overview over all the stages before you build your cars, but I will provide no detailed track data (neither will I do any test runs on my own). The first rallye stage will be downloadable at the very beginning so that you get a feeling for what awaits the car and you can set them up properly. Due to the randomness of the stages, it is not unlikely that the fastest car on the first stage will not the fastest car overall. It also means that it is senseless to spend a lot of time setting up your car, because you just don't know the stages. So it's not only about building good cars, there's also a little bit of luck involved.

Each day I will run one stage of the rallye and update the standings in the forums. After the rallye is done, the winning three cars and their .lua files will be uploaded for everyone to look into. I will also share the track files afterwards.

This should be fun! I'm looking forward to your entries!

BRC Shakedown Rallye

This is the first short test of the random rallye championship! In this post you get information on the technical specifications of the classes (each player may have one entry in each class), a sneak peek at the stages and the deadlines.
Image
Current number of entries:
Group B: 33
Demo 1600: 22

Image
Bigger resolution maps:
Stage 1
Stage 2
Stage 3

Deadlines

Entries are open from the day of the start of the open beta phase of the upcoming update until Sunday, April 6, 12 p.m. CEST (UTC +2h).

Send me
  • the name of your car
  • the name of the country you want to start for (your nationality)
  • the engine .lua-file (name must include the class and your name)
  • the platform .lua-file (name must include the class and your name)
  • the model .lua-file (name must include the class and your name)

Please zip your files and send only one PM!

The first car(s) you send me count(s), so don't even think about flooding my inbox with revised versions. Cars which don't meet the technical specifications will be disqualified immediately.

The overview over the participants will be done on Monday after the deadline and the first results should be in on Tuesday.

Let the entries roll in! If anything remains unclear, feel free to ask!

Re: BRC: Bavarian Rallye Challenges

Is there going to be a specific fuel type restriction, or will we be able to run whatever we wish seeing as there isn't an accurate racing fuel available?

Re: BRC: Bavarian Rallye Challenges

For everything not specified you can choose whatever you like. That also means you can choose V8s in the Demo 1600 class for example.

Re: BRC: Bavarian Rallye Challenges

Are the tracks "dirt" or just bumpy track? Also, can you compete in both groups?

Re: BRC: Bavarian Rallye Challenges

In Group B, the weight limit should be 960kg. For the size of engine used, this is the correct weight.

Re: BRC: Bavarian Rallye Challenges

The limits are not 100% accurate Group B limits, I just tried to choose a weight which plays well. We don't have lots of body types right now and a raised weight limits gives you more room to choose different ones.

Re: BRC: Bavarian Rallye Challenges

Do the bumps actually have an effect, other than being a small hill then back down? As in, will the cars lose contact with the road more with stiffer dampers/anti rollbars/ springs, or is there no negative effect for going really stiff?

I will join both :)

Re: BRC: Bavarian Rallye Challenges

Nah, no jumping around, that would require a different, more complex simulation approach. As I said in the "How to build custon tracks" thread, too stiff suspensions decrease the car's tameness and it will have to go slower through corners and accelerate slower and braking distance will increase on difficult track sections.
