Re: Pay It Forward Design Challenge [Round 1 Challenges]

OK I've done it. (Finally)
After faffing about failing to get the last .6 mpg out of an NA setup I finally gave in and added a turbo in addition too swapping out the slush box for a manual 5 spd box, replaced all the worn out parts, new wheels, took out the back seats (what am I gonna use em for ?) and sprayed it black. I wanted to remove the chrome trim but my "dad" (aka the rules) wouldn't allow it.
Now she's more reliable 65.1
comfy (for two) 42.9
prestigious 45.9
safer 25.3
can do 21.6 mpg
costs 11525.30 (143.81 units)
and can to the Green Hell in 10:25.61 - :D

Is that a not-Eldorado? That styling looks insanely boss!

Re: Pay It Forward Design Challenge [Round 1 Challenges]

it would be a not-Eldorado if it had 2 doors. As it's a 4-door, a not-deVille would be a more apt description.

Re: Pay It Forward Design Challenge [Round 1 Challenges]

EnryGT5 here is my challenge to you (apologies for the delay)

It's 1970, Gimmer Motors have made a big mistake.
gim3000.PNG
gim3000.PNG (256.51 KiB) Viewed 3576 times

Their new Gimmer 3000 is not selling in the numbers they need (let alone hoped) and they are losing money hand over fist. It turns out their biggest market is grumpy old men and they don't like it. It's not comfortable enough, certainly not tame enough and only a hooligan needs a 0-60 time of less than 8 seconds.

Nor is it good enough for the younger generation who shun Gimmer as "grand-dad's car"

Management have asked you to fix the car so it no longer upsets their core market. The problem is, they've run out of time & money, so you've no R&D budget.
Changes to the platform are out and engine changes down to a minimum. Also the resulting car cannot cost more than the original to produce.

Your target
Tameness > 48
Comfort > 46
Prestige > 20
Safety > 25
Economy better than 7.9lt / 100km

Total cost less than $8923.43
Prod unit less than 175

You may not alter anything in the platform except colour if you wish.
You cannot alter the Engine block material, bore or stroke, head material, type or valve nos.

Anything else is fair game

Good luck (I doubt you'll need it)

Re: Pay It Forward Design Challenge [Round 1 Challenges]

Year 1991: Rallies are popular all over the country, and you, a young mechanic with race driving skills, don't want to miss this race, the 1991 Great German Open Rally, in which cars are split into several categories based on price. Since you don't have much money, you enter the lowest class, with a $5500 price limit, and of course you buy a car, a bad car. A 1977 Seishido Achernar AR25 1.2BX, the second cheapest Achernar ever produced, the first place going to it's pre-facelift version, based on the ancient 1969 P-Series engine design. It's worn out pretty badly after being drove for 120000km, at least it's a sub 800kg pocket rocket with lots of potential, but your budget is ridiculously tight, turn that aluminium lump under the hood in a screaming monster and prepare your tin can for serious off-road action, if you dare

Restrictions
Total Cost: Under $5500
Tech Year has to remain 1977 both chassis and engine
You can't alter engine displacement, block and head material, number of valves and head type
You can't use race exhaust headers, race air intake and semi slicks,it has to remain street legal
You can't use forced induction, as the old 1.2 would break under the pressure
You need an Average Reliability rating over 60,repeated bad race conditions are horrible for the old lump
You need to use Regular Unleaded fuel
You can't alter the stock 4-speed's spacings (but you can swap in a 5-speed if you want)
You need an Offroad rating of at least 20 to enter the rally
You need a Tameness rating over 50, the track is dangerous
You need a Safety rating over 15, same reason as above
You can't change chassis material, suspension type and body material
You have to keep the car FR with a longitudinal engine
You need a Loudness rating under 50, you don't want to be deafened by an Achernar, do you?
You can strip the interior
You can't install driver assists, that's pretty pointless when you're not even making 100hp
You can't use quality sliders over +6
You can only add wings and lips, don't touch headlights, grilles et cetera
You can make it any color you like, extra awesome points if it's flashy
You need an Economy rating better than 11.50 lt/100km, extra fuel slows your already sluggish tin can down
You can't use underbody cladding

Goal

Beat last year's record setting run of 7:35 on the BRC Shakedown Stage 1 track, which you can find right here:

Reminds me of the jalopnik article about some guy who managed to sneak his rusty M3 tin can into a WRC rally stage.

Oops, forgot to tell i used mod fixtures, Pyrlix's boxy 80's grille and plastic/chrome strips, you can find them in Pyrlix' 3D Department thread or in the Community Mod Pack #01

Anyways, have you started working on it? I'm curious to see how much you can push out of that jalopy
