Re: Battle of the Half-Tons [RESULTS]

The majority of my costs come from tech points in the chassis/frame/body to up its environmental resistance (as was true for the real F-100), also some in the engine to increase durability(the Ford 300/4.9 is damned tough). I was trying to make as close to a true "half-ton" truck as I could, most true half-tons in the '70s were rarely over 350ci (5.7L), the F150 is a "heavy" half-ton in this era and that would have been out of the scope of what I wanted to build.

Re: Battle of the Half-Tons [RESULTS]

I am guessing the "OH GOD WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!" came from that turbo ramp because I put a turbo in a half-ton pickup.
That is late 70s turbo tech for ya! :P
It took me quite a lot of tuning to get to a utility of 130.9.

Blasters: I have to give you props for building a truck that was representative for that time in history.

I'm guessing that DMA is short for Desert Mountains Automotive?

That's a contributing factor. It was really because your Drivability was a terrifyingly low 11.4. The turbo definitely did not help that figure. :D

1) yes, Blasters did a great job recreating a period-correct F100. :)
2) Yes. There was Desert Motors (Blasters) and Desert Mountain Automotive (you, shortened to DMA)

Re: Battle of the Half-Tons [RESULTS]

Most expensive and highest maintenance cost!!!!

I couldn't resist making my truck high tech so I installed "set and forget" mechanical injection... How would I, esteemed European that I am :P , know that them good old boys wanted to tinker with the engine! I mean, I installed a sports intake and full length extractors to my truck and the mufflers are low resistance sports types as well, what's left to change? Marketing wasn't aware that there is actual dust in the air in the mid-west, over here dust is just a boogeyman story to tell our youngin's so they remember to change their air filter once in a while!!! :D

Long story short, I did that price conversion thing to US 1978 dollars and my truck was about twice the price of the original OP's example...

Hopefully my truck performs well enough to overcome it's price and maintenance shortfall or else Bogliq Automotive USA is/was in real big trouble! :geek:

Guess I wasn't the only one who used MFI :P
Yes, my motor is a 3.0L Turbo Mechanical Injection Inline-6, with 208 HP and 289 FT-LBs of torque.

Re: Battle of the Half-Tons [RESULTS]

Just by looking at your pics I would have made your tires wider (at least 225s, any more than 235s and the flares look stupid up front) and high profile (at least 60), that would have helped a LOT with driveability. Easiest way to do it is to make your chassis but NO fixtures, make your engine and then all the other bits THEN after you tweak the body shape (get the right tire size that you want) add your fixtures, that way if you find that you really do need 255s you can add more fender flare without having to re-install all your fixtures.

IMO it's not necessary because I already competed. Perhaps for the 2nd generation Rado Rancher.

Re: Battle of the Half-Tons [RESULTS]

I've never even considered a Turbo, 1978 seems to early for me to use in a street production car.

However, I love the different approaches we all have taken, that's the kind of variety that made this competition so interesting to me.

Re: Battle of the Half-Tons [RESULTS]

If there was a Ute body, a pickup from it might be more feasible (Read as: BRAT, Rampage, Caddy, etc.)... in due time.
