Homologation 1988 Group Automation [Reviews]

My friend and I are working on a car. I'm doing the engine, he's doing the car itself. We're almost done with it, it's called the Mattmoto/Dalpine Dakar RS16.

First off, thanks for allowing a wider range of car bodies timewise...my 1988 Group A Varro is a little ways off but it's almost ready.

I do have a concern and it namely stems from what differences there may be between the stand-alone and Steam version of the game.

I bring it up cause when trying to submit in the Hot Hatch Competition several times, while on my end I'm within pricing and eco targets, I've had to revise (and then out of frustration) remake a far cheaper version (that I'm hoping to send once this is posted), am I alone or is something else going on that I'm utterly oblivious to.

Rambling aside...I'm hoping to finish up very soon...we'll see...life hasn't been ...fun for me.

@DoctorNarfy: that isn't the car you're submitting to this is it? Since the trim there was in 2015, and the year of this contest is 1988 for one thing! (Also medium compound tyres only).

I'm almost finished with mine too, just have to figure out how to design the rear. My car is best described as: Lordred said in his premise that the age of the RWD rally car was over, let's see if I can prove this wrong by making a little homage to Lancia's other legend, the Stratos

I'm not really seeing the benefit of going RWD, as there is a minimum weight, and even with Hand Made Aluminum body, I struggled to achieve the minimum weight and budget. But, I'd love to be proven wrong.

Well, one thing I should mention is that like the Stratos, my car's MR. I don't think there were any mid-engined AWD production cars back then.

I still don't think that it'll be at an advantage to AWD cars, especially in the off-road stakes. And since I decided to use corrosion resistant steel, there'll probably be a prestige penalty. Let's just say that I'm using some pretty nice engine parts

ok, so that was mildly embarrassing that I thought the RS200 was MR up until this moment.

Also, did all those cars that were AWD in rally spec share their AWD-ness in production trim? I didn't think they did. Either way, M-AWD (in transverse) isn't available in Automation in 1988 D:

EDIT: I built a couple of quick M-AWD cars, and my god, they perform horribly compared to my little MR. That said, it does confer a fairly significant offroad bonus...

yes you might be..... and i was getting around 20mpg with 14.1:1 AFR. IIRC so at least...

Interesting, I am getting 20.2mpg with 13.5:1 AFR on the 2.7L SOHC 3v for the benchmark car.

my first cat was using 13:5 AFR getting 18.887MPG

the car that i think i will be submitting are using 14.0:1 AFR getting 20.58MPG

not really surprising. since my car is quite high tech on the engine bay

I'm sure I'm not alone in this but I've actually been running my AFR ultra lean, and been at that angle for a while, and it's the same for my newer Varro model (as lean as the game allows and if it was possible, I'd run even leaner).

My issues stem less from making minimal economy, and more from making max use of mpg via means such as aerodynamics or of course the weight of the car(s). That and making sure my 4wd car dosen't entirely suck driving wise.

I actually revised my car a bit to make a bit less power than I'd wanted since I wanted to see how much more economy I could squeeze out, while I was able to get this with a turbo 4banger, I don't think it'll be on this model but maybe later ones, I did promise in my previous story for the 84 model that a V6 was in the cards (and I wanted one but didn't want to use a V8), So it's got one.

It'll be intresting to see how I'll fail this one but we'll see.

I'll put up information about this car later on.

Also forgot to ask two questions even though I've already submitted (pending approval)...

is 4WD mandatory? While I'm no stranger to it, I'm tempted to put a 'last gasp' of RWD but if not, I'm okay with this as well.

While I know costs are between $12,000-$14000, is that a minimal/maximum cost range? I ask since I went a very cost effective and cheap route without too much a compromise on quality.

AWD and 4WD are not required.

Total cost is limited to the listed range
