This is why I click through the tabs before actually marking down the scores, because there are a couple things that have to "settle in", so to speak.

Even the pre-steam version did this with Aero specifically. You always had to click the cooling tab down then up once to get the values to calculate properly.

SUV's weren't "popular" as "family" vehicles until the early 90's true, but they DID exist. See: Ford Bronco, Chevrolet Suburban, Dodge Ramcharger.

I will say from what I've seen so far is that there is MASSIVE variety in how you all are tackling this challenge. It's great! :D

the guy invented the Cherokee 4 years earlier! the first propper not so utilitarian SUV, dont say it haves a 4L inline 6!!!!

The first gen Jeep Cherokee 1974-1983, and it was based on the Wagoner which started production in 1963.

Edit to add http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport_util ... le#History

Apparently by todays definition they go back to 1935 with the Chevrolet Carryall Suburban
Desert Mountains Automotive Specializing in high reliability cars and trucks for more demanding needs.

Honestly, what it reminded me of more than any of those was a Range Rover.

Sorry, Trackpaduser. The slots all filled up before you submitted. Perhaps next ime.

ENTRIES ARE CLOSED. Those of you who are in on the first page who still want to show off your cars *cough*SIMON*cough* should do so now. I will post results in the next day or so, too tired to do so tonight.

Re: Family Haulers [1980] [CLOSED]

Romanov proudly presents the "Katusha".

Image

The Katusha stands for classic values. Families that need to transport their groceries (Vodka, Kartofel', Kapusta) from Babushka's village to their flat in the city with a carpet nailed to the wall, find everything they need in the Katusha.
Equipped with a newly developed 2.2 liter 4 cylinder iron curtain.. eh block, the Katusha will get you where you need to go.. in style.

Image

Now with powerful steering, which our engineers stol.. received in exchange for other technical developments from the USSR.

На здоровье!

(European version with an actual interior will follow in approximately three years!)

Liking the style of the Neptune 424 and Katusha - this competition has a lot of nifty designs!

Also, condolences to trackpaduser. I was busy from Friday when this started through Sunday evening, and I was feeling really nervous about whether I'd be able to make an entry at all in time, just because the slots were filling up so quickly.

I think Vic has really hit a good balance on these challenges, nothing super complicated, quick, easy and fun. This is not to say I dont like the other challenges but these are nice in how fast they go and the variety of what is submitted. Cant wait for the next one, just doubt I can do any after next week since I will be on vacation.

Re: Family Haulers [1980] [RESULTS]

Alright, here we go with the results for the 1980 Family Haulers competition!

Noted deductions or bonuses are already calculated in the final score. The benchmark would have taken 5th place, just barely edged out in the last couple entries. For reference, the top four scored 9568, 9901, 10235, and 10771 points respectively.

Without further ado...

24th - Daiki Stardust - 3.0L Turbo I6/4MT RWD - "Bring an extra gas can and a fire extinguisher." - 5 deductions, 6926 pts
23rd - Mars Engineering Redarius - 3.0L V8/4AT FWD - "Screw the gas can. Bring a whole new engine." - 5 deductions, 7681 pts
22nd - PolMot 8-2 - 2.0L V8/4AT RWD - "As refined as a bowl of gravel. Also, radio optional." - 1 deduction, 7879 pts
21st - Rado Carrier - 2.0L I4/4AT FWD - "Towing the Titanic with a rowboat might be faster." - 5 deductions, 7930 pts

17th - Bogliq Bastion - 2.5L I4/5MT FWD - "Moldovan Luxury: Fine interior details, coupled with a crappy underpowered engine and manual gearbox." - 5 deductions, 8684 pts
16th - Fuentes Progression Estate - 2.1L I6/4AT FWD - "As reliable as your local crackhead, but at least prettier." - 5 deductions, 8731 pts
15th - Ossan Prince Edward GLC - 2.2L I6/4AT FWD - "Can't even road rage in it." - 3 deductions, 8770 pts
14th - Marks Patron Ising - 1.0L Turbo FP V8/3AT RWD - "A fun car for the couch potato lifestyle." - 8874 pts
13th - LHE Famsed - 1.7L Turbo I4/4AT RWD - "It's like a Baltazar Quark on drugs. But with the manners of a pissed off wildebeest." - 1 BONUS, 8941 pts

Re: Family Haulers [1980] [RESULTS]

Aaand this is what happens if we try to combine "high torque", "1980" and "family car" into one. At least I've sacrificed myself for everyone else...

edit; The newer grades ("A" and "B") of Stardust Sedan has a smaller engine and AT to fix the fuel economy now. The car on fire? It should be resolved since the car is now heavier than before, including the "L" grade.

I just lol'd while reading that.
10th place is what I was expecting from the car, so I'm happy with it.

For those who were wondering how a turd looks like, here it's:

Image

It's like the typical Jalopnik car, a brown, rear-wheel drive diesel manual transmission wagon.

Re: Family Haulers [1980] [RESULTS]

I have a thing for brown cars, because of early chldhood memories of a chocolate brown Mercedes.
Lovely car and shows nicely that no matter how many points one gets in Vic's competition, it doesn't do anything to the fact how many awesome cars were created here!

Thanks to Vic and everyone who participates!

On a sidenote: Romanov is again proud to have cracked the top 4, to celebrate this we give out fragrance trees for the first 500 Katushas. Buyers can choose between Sweet Vodka and Smoked Eel.
