Re: American Eagle Automotive

[1972]The story of Franken Mosta

Around early 1970, Redhawk Performance Group (the performance division of American Eagle Automotive) brought in a new engineer, Edmund Elset. We were working on a experimental 7.0L High Performance NASCAR engine that could run on the new Unleaded fuel, and we needed more engineers on the project. Edmund Elset was brought in for that reason. But Elset also had a huge fascination for wagons! He immediately jumped into the engineering branch for our family wagon we were designing. It was to start production within the next two years. Now, our company policy allows an individual to work in both the standard production, and the performance divisions of our company, so Elset elected to work both on the 7.0L project and the Wagon project.

Well, one could guess what Elset was up to next when one of the 7.0L race engines disappeared into his garage just a month after being hired. But, no one knew the extent to which he was taking his "project"...

And here we have taken a pic of the experimental engine! No specs yet, but by the looks it is definitely a V8 with DOHC head design, and all aluminum construction even for the block! This is quite an exotic choice for the time!

You see, Redhawk Performance Group, when they design engines, always have room for improvement. Well, Edmund Elset took full advantage of that, and went all out with this "project" of his. He took the basic engine block, with its all aluminum construction, and bored the living crap out of it! Next he reportedly reground the crankshaft for a massive boost in stroke! The base 7.0L engine has a bore of 4.25 inches and stroke of 3.77 inches for its 428ci of madness, and Elset had gotten it all the way to 510ci in displacement! That was more than any current full production engine in the American region at that time! The closest competitor was Cadillac with their 500ci bigblock engine for the high-end luxury cars. He had the engine with a bore just a hair north of 4.5in and a 4 inch stroke as well!

Edmund Elset's custom engine created out of the 7.0L experimental engine. Fully dyno-proven and tested.

After a couple of months later the head director at Redhawk Performance Group stopped by Elset's home to talk with him. This is when we found out Edmund Elset's plans for his "project" as he liked to call it. Sitting beside the 510ci beast of an engine were plans to put said engine in our wagon! The director couldn't believe his eyes!

"Are you serious! Look, you make this bastardy Frankenstein creation ON YOUR OWN TIME! Then prove it by running timed trials at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. If it does well enough, we will talk about it again."

Determined to get the approval from the head director at RPG, Elset worked on the Frankenstein project in his free time for the next year, tinkering and fine-tuning the beast to bring out it's full potential. He dug into the RPG stockpile of racing and performance equipment to find the needed supplies for making a 510ci bigblock V8 workable and drivable in a wagon package.
That list included:
    * Bullet-proof 3 speed Automatic Transmission
    * Sports Compound Tires
    * Solid Disk 2 Piston Brakes with our in-house Racing Brake Compound
    * Semi Clad Undertray
    * Seating Capacity for 5 - Handmade
    * Luxury 8 Track
    * Power Steering
    * Advanced Safety Measures
    * Heavily Tuned Hydro-pneumatic Suspension

And mind you, this is all on a full steel ladder frame with a steel body... And McPherson Strut front suspension with a Solid Axle rear which all weighs in at over 4,500 lbs!

Well, it was late 1971, and the whole performance division was invited to a company-payed track day at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Everyone was encouraged to bring their projects, in-house and from other manufacturers, to the track for a full day of test-and-tune racing. Most of the projects were company-related, but a few guys brought in their "overseas racing pods" as the running joke goes. Those who worked in American Eagle Automotive but did not work in the Redhawk Performance Group were also invited, though if they wanted to race, they needed to use a company vehicle provided for them. Most of those in AEA but not in RPG were seen spectating. There would be cheers when the guys from RPG drove their project cars onto the track, shouts of excitement, and an occasional ye-haw! But, when the spectators heard the roar of the 510ci HOR (High Output Race) engine in Edmund Elset's project car.... It blew the ears right off their dumb grins! And to even further shock... It was a WAGON that was thumping onto the track! The jaw dropped on the head director of Redhawk Performance Group. Edmund Elset had actually done it!

It took 20 laps for the director of RPG to finally grasp the truth... Edmund Elset had created a Monster of a vehicle unlike anything else seen before. They had their talk, and the outcome was clear, Elset's Franken Monsta would be produced in limited production along side the standard wagon. It would be targeting the super and hyper car markets, primarily the later, as an image booster for American Eagle Automotive Company. The sales of the standard Franken wagon far exceeded expectations even with the revised sales figure used after the Monsta model was a go. It was a sheer stroke of brilliance for AEA and a huge win for the Redhawk Performance Group! This insured RPG would remain in American Eagle Automotive, even in the later dark years for AEA.
