I don't aspire to own a Koinegsegg, only to sit in one.

What I aspire to own is an old Fiat and a Subaru BRZ.
Salt is what 95% of children are made from, and generally 72% of forum users.

Also 82% of statistics are made up.

Re: 2016 Automation Chicago Auto Show [NOW VOTING]

I actually mostly make regular cars as opposed to just hypercars. I've mostly shown performance things in this thread since those are the big draws at auto shows. Concepts and performance cars draw people in, and then they see all the regular cars from that company also being made and just might buy one. While I'd love to own a Lamborghini someday, I also have a taste for quirky cars like the 1983 Toyota Tercel 4wd wagon and even the Pontiac Aztek. Seriously. Also more recent and pretty affordable cars like the Scion FRS/Subaru BRZ.

They work as an aspirational target for young people, however eventually 90% of all people will realize that no matter how hard they work they'll never get to drive let alone own one, and this let down can cause severe loss of self confidence and depression. Blinded by the gloss of exposed carbon fiber engine bits they forget that only a third-owner 1995 Erin Visto can deliver true motoring joy. And once they realize that it is already too late. I am totally not making any of this up.

OK... Aspirational targets and dreams are bad. I get where you're coming from now :)

The whole point of hypercars is they're stuff of dreams. You're not supposed to get one easily, it's supposed to be unachievable for most. That's why they are dream cars. And IMHO people need dreams.
I'm happy dreaming of hypercars and conjuring one up on Automation every now and again while I continue driving my 1000€ Ford and working on my 500€ Alfa Romeo.

There's also one important factor about hypercars in real life. They advance technology and design. Like racing cars, they push the envelope up for all other car classes too. And they allow designers
and engineers to focus on their passion and inspiration rather than budget constrains.

But what is wrong with everyone aspiring to what they choose and presenting cars they like on here? I wouldn't call someone else's dream cancer myself.

That show was bad (strictly my opinion, to which I have my own reasons, which I do not feel like spamming here), and their car choices were deliberately uncool :P

TurboJ wrote:But fuck hypercars? Come on! What cars do kids put posters of on their walls? Beetles and hybrid Toyotas? There's always value in being cool and the world NEEDS hypercars!

Honest reflection time: the world needs hypercars at some level, yes... but I don't think it's wrong to vocally oppose the religious fawning that gets heaped upon them in order to, shall we say, cool the jets. And I'm saying that as the user who arguably makes the maddest, most superlative, most fuck you of hypercars in my company thread.

My girlfriend's parents drive a Prius. It suits their academic image (her dad is a Professor of environmental sciences). Needless to say I quite enjoy ragging them about it :P

That being said I don't think I could live with myself if I actually owned a hypercar. Or my girlfriend's parents owned one. I'm actually quite happy they own something that reflects, well... their way of life and preoccupations and their Asianness... I'm allowed to say this only because I am also Asian and drive a goddamn Civic.

So, I see the votes are no longer coming in. I propose we close this off and name the winners. I will post the results with the prizes in 4 hours after this post is made.

Re: 2016 Automation Chicago Auto Show [NOW VOTING]

Allrighty, teh results are in!

3rd place and a round of our imaginary applause goes to DeusExMackia. Nicely done!

2nd place and a methaphorical cookie goes to TurboJ, who is one of the sudden discoveries on the forum with his cool designs.

1st place - Thecarlover. I am guessing very much due to the DiamondEmerald concept, which is very classy and very shiny.

Here's the badge, which you may resize and place in your signature

And a photoshop of your car of choice, which you should contact me about.
Thanks to everyone for participating, see you on the next car show.

I don't think so. Renault put a F1 V8 engine into an Espace so...

That moment you realize your luxury car's V8 (which was designed in 1979) has more than 300 more horsepower than your ridiculously expensive highly tuned hypercar V12.
