Hello and welcome to the Swedish Engine Company page. The main name is however Svenskt Motor Bolag (which is just a translation) for short SMB.

This company was founded in 1975 in Sweden by engineer Jonathan Norlander and started producing family cars. A while later Jonathan found his interest in sports car and founded a division called Visby Division which focus was on sports and super cars which were engineered in the town of Visby in sweden. SMB's focus was reliabilty and fun driving experiance. Also making the cars affordable.

The first engine the company produced in 1975 was a 2.0 L inline 4 with both turbo and natural aspiration configuration. Later there came a 1.8 liter turbo from the same family that was put in the Ruger. The 2.0 litre engine was put in the family saloon car Leijon produced from 1980. (name was an unfortunate dyslexic fault from Jonathans part. The name is a misspelling of Lejon - swedish for lion). Leijon would become the flagship car (if you will) of the company. Only the first Leijon models would have 2 different variations on the engine. One 2 litre turbo and one natural aspirated. The first engine was not always as reliable as hoped to be, but it was a good foundation for the future engine and cars to be based upon. Every 10 years there would be a new Leijon model with new engines variations and gadgets.

In 1985, the engineers tried to make a small sports car with the 1.8 L turbo engine from their original 1975 design. Rear wheel drive and a lightweight body with a not to powerful engine was a good idea they thought. The car came in hard top and soft top editions. Also very limited since it was not long until production was aborted. The name was... Ruger RSS

In the year 2000, SMB finished with a long awaited 8 Valve inline 4 engine which in the 2.3 litre turbo configuration, could produce 233 BHP and 240 ft-lb. The engine came in 4 configurations and put in the new Leijon 00 models. The car came in 4 variations. The "basic" with the 2.0 L version of the engine. The "Sport" with natural aspirated 2.3 L engine. The "Sport AWD" with 2.3 R variant of the engine. This model came in 4 wheel drive with power distribution 57f/43R. The engine produced 200 bhp with an air cooled turbo. The last of the line car was the "Aero Sport" which was the top of the line. With the most powerful of the engines, 233 horsepower made sure it could deliver a serious tone to the normal family home. The 2000 model of the Leijon did however not come in anything but sedan versions. That however was changed in later models.

in the early 2000's, a demand for economic family cars was rising. Since the 2000 model of Leijon was only fitted with powerful turbo engines and was not really big enough for family use, a redesign was developed with a more economic engine. With bigger strokes and cheap materials it was supposed to be both cheap in buying costs and running costs. However the 1.9 litre engine may seem underpowered for such a big car, but there will be bigger engines available. Both larger economic engines but also the engines from the previous Leijon 00 line. With bigger engines you better interior equipment and quality overall so the prices do rise you want better specs. The base car is however cheap to run and to buy and is very reliable and is available with automatic and manual gearboxes.
