Greatest Automotive engines ever made?

So what do you guys think are/were the greatest auto engines ever made and why?

I say the Small Block Ford "Windsor". Though not as prevalent as the Small Block Chevy (GEN1) but It had a longer life '62 to Current day and was widely used from little "grocery getters" to pickup trucks to GT40s. It even outlived its replacement the "Cleveland V-8". It compactness and light weight has also allowed it to find its way into many engine swaps and kit cars.

"The Beginning" the 260 V8

The final Factory Windsor 5.0 Explorer

Runner up for the Motor is the Ford 427 SOHC just because of the awesome of a high revving OHC big block.

Hum, I'll go with the BMC A-Series.

Produced in various forms from 1951 right up till 2000, in capacities ranging from 803cc to 1275cc and power ratings ranging 30hp to 69hp. It became the basis of both BMC and Nissan's four cylinder engine families - Nissan licensed the engine design for a while, then developed their own engines from it later on. It powered everything from the humble Austin A30, Morris Minor, Austin Mini, Austin Metro right up to the Monte Carlo winning Mini Cooper racers and quite literally hundreds of other cars. It was a rather compromised design, particularly in the Mini where the gearbox was forced to share oil with the engine itself due to packaging, but its compact size and comparatively simple maintenance (though not in the Mini's cramped engine bay) made it a long lived and well loved workhorse. It powered the cars of the poorest, the richest, enthusiasts and commuters.

What about the nissan RB engines? they were pretty popular.
Also i know it has been mentioned somewhere in these discussions that trucks might be in the works. So I was thinking some of the diesels like the Cummins 5.9L, Duramax 6.6L, Isuzu 6.5L, 7.3L powerstroke, 6.4L powerstroke just to name a few.

What about some engines like
-VW boxer
- BMW inline six family of engines
- honda 1.6L

Im just rambling here...but I cannot wait to see what you can do with this game!! especially the engine side!

What about transmission? This might not be the right place to ask, but how much variety is there going to be in drivetrain selection?

The late 7.3 Power strokes were horrible pieces of shit that sometimes didn't even make the drive home from the lot before failing...

The International Harverster 6.9L IDI Diesel has got to be one of the greatest truck engines ever made. It changed the poor image of diesel engines in the US, and has got to be one of the most durable and reliable diesel engines ever made.

The 7.3 Based off of that was also a pretty good engine, although the early turbo models had some problems as well I've been told..

The Honda K series motor is another of the greatest engines ever made.. 220hp out of a 2.0L, and that amazing sound it makes.. Yet its still reliable and fairly fuel efficient.

The Jaguar XK6 engine... enough said :P

The Nissan RB series of Inline 6s.. Probably the last great I6 put into a sports car.. the 2JZ gets a close second.

GM LS series, great power, tons of aftermarket, seems to fit in everything, good mileage, and lightweight (at least the aluminum ones, not sure about the irons).

Other engines that come to mind.
Honda B Series
Ford Windsor
Mazda Wankel
VW Aircooled

Do you mean the 6.0L powerstrokes? The 7.3L's were actually not that bad as you say, if anything the 6.0L is worse off. That thing lasted two years bfore they pulled it off the market.
And I agree with you on the 2JZ 8-)

@ Nikhowe

Yeah my mistake, it was the 6.0L, not the late 7.3 that had all those problems.

The S54B32 was a high-performance engine used in BMW M vehicles. The block was made from grey cast iron rather than aluminum to achieve greater rigidity from the same dimensions. It is a 3.2 L (3246 cc) engine; bore is 87 mm (3.4 in) and stroke is 91 mm (3.6 in). It has reinforced forged steel connecting rods, graphite coated cast aluminum pistons and a forged steel crankshaft.
