The legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife

Map of the complete track, including the Grand Prix circuit
Some facts:
- The track first consisted of Nord and Süd Schleifes (North and South) The Nord part changed a bit but is mostly what it is today. The Süd part was rebuilt in the 1980s, where bits of that original track were adopted in the Nürburgring track during the 80s when F1 cars drove around.
- The current Nordschleife is 20832 metres long (12.944 miles), so that is excluding the Grand Prix circuit.
- The fastest lap ever driven around the Nordschleife (20832m variant) is held by Stefan Bellof, at 6 minutes 11 seconds and 13 hundreds, driving a Porsche 956 on the 28th of May, 1983

- A lot of car manufacturers use the Nordschleife as a testcircuit to post times and check their overall performance. For instance, Renault has held the quickest time for FWD cars on the Nordschleife with their Megane RS Trophy, at 8:07:97. Seat has beaten this time with their Leon Cupra GT, also beating the 8 minute marker, at 7:58:44, making it the fastest FWD at this very moment. To give you an indication of how quick this time is, General Motors conducted a test with the Chevrolet Corvette C6 Z51 driven by Dave Hill, completing a lap at 7:59:00.
- Eventhough a company reinvested a lot in the circuit, a lot of people still visit it daily for viewing or driving themselves and quite some events like DTM, VLN Langstreckenrennen, other races and car meetings are organized, the circuit went bankrupt at the 17th of July 2012, with a debt of 287 million. The complete track and facilities are worth 130 million. After long debates, a company named Capricorn Group, who manufactures carparts, bought the track on March 12 2014 for 100 million and has gotten 25 million euros for reinvesting in the track and develop it.
- Weather conditions can vary from one section to another. Often, during a race it's sunny on one side, and it rains on the other side of the track. A thrilling and challenging event for the drivers and their cars of course. There even have been reports of one time one side of the track was completely covered in snow and the other side was a sunny wintersday.
Crashes and Deaths
One of the most difficult corners, is the Adenauer Frost. You enter at high speed but have to slow down significantly and at the right time, or else you either slow down too much, with high speed traffic coming from behind, or you totally overshoot the upcoming chicane and if you're lucky enough, not totally crash or flip your car.
I found this video of Adenauer Forst in 1970, with the cars of that era driving (and crashing!) or being lucky enough to maneuvre the car back on track without any (visible) damage.
The current deathtoll of the Nürburgring during it's 87 years in business, totals at 73 deaths. Though, rumors say at least 2 to 12 people A YEAR die at the track.
Maybe this video proves a bit why those rumors exist:
