You got the 216 error, too?
Well, anyway, I did hear about one solution that's worked: just move your old Cars & Engines folders to another location on your hard drive, and the game will just create new ones; it worked for me, certainly.
Another piece of advice that I've been given, is that you can even try to re-install your old cars and engines piece by piece, to see which ones will work, and which ones will crash the game. If you only have a modest collection, that shouldn't be too difficult.
