Game wont save car body if it doesn't have an engine or trim

I've lost many, many nice looking cars that I've spent hours on because the game randomly crashes. The save button doesn't actually save the damn car if it doesn't have an engine or a trim, it creates an entry, but when you load it up hoping that your hours of effort weren't wasted it gives you the finger and loads the car as though you're making a new one.
