Windows 8 [in]compatibility

I've given up. I've checked registry keys against my desktop (Windows 7). I've uninstalled, reinstalled, copied and pasted every related file, both in the install directory (why ProgramData not Program Files as default?), and documents. I've searched for Temp files in AppData and Temp. directories, etc. Everything matches what my desktop has for file locations, settings and registry keys except the laptop is running Windows 8 - and yet, Automation can't detect its current version.

What to do to fix this issue?

This would go into the support forum but anyway, what are the symptoms? Does it say version 0 even though you've installed the game already? Have you tried doing a manual install of the patches?

This is strange, as my test Windows 8 install works perfectly.

The registry key only matters for the installer/patches. So they can find the appropriate directory. If Automation is correctly installed the folder should look like this:

Check that Visual C++ Runtime is correctly installed. You can download it and install it yourself here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-nz/download ... px?id=5582

If you double click/open the launcher from the directory itself does that work?

If you cut and paste the whole Automation install to say C:\Automation and then double click on the launcher in there does it work?

Your problem here is that your using windows 8 to begin with.

Everyone knows to skip generations with windows.

3.1=awesome
95=sucked
98=good
millennium=sucked - i used windows 2000, wish it was still supported, best os i ever had
xp=good
vista=terrible
7=good
8=haven't tried it but i heard it was the worst thing to happen to pc industry sales since its been tracked in early 90s.

I imagine that this formula can continue before windows 3.1 but i don't think anyone is still alive today that used any of those.

the good news is that if these trends continue, windows 9 could be good, and automation might work on it

Windows 8 isn't bad at all, choosing between 7 and 8 is really a matter of personal preference.

I like Windows 8 for the most part - not sure whats causing this issue. Everything is in place where it should be, and it doesn't matter what I change or move the install to - still doesn't work. :/

Are you guys storing anything in temp folders or anything? ApplicationData or such?

I run Automation on win 8.1 perfectly fine.

I got an email from someone else with the same issue, and have solved it. So lets do the same steps.

Uninstall Automation.

Download a new copy of the launcher from here: http://automationgame.com/gamefiles/Launcher_Setup.exe

Make sure it is installing to Program Files or somewhere that is not Program Data

Download and install B1417 setup:

This comment is asinine and borders on retart. No one is alive who used windows in 1992? Windows 95 was considered among the best. PC sales fall mostly because of increased tablet sales which did not exist in the early 90s. Anyway, ignoring this child, I'd like to point that this does not sound like a windows 8 issue, and many of us have used Automation just fine on windows 8 and 8.1. I will be testing it on windows 10 technical preview soon.
