will it be possible that with some R&D one can eliminate or diminish the drawbacks of having an old body at the expense of something else like engineering, extra wieght or less passenger room?

Cars continue to improve apart from in safety, that can be offset by your techpool, better safety packages and more weight to some degree, but not for very long.
