Often in larger pickups meant for farm or construction jobs the transmission will have a real low first gear, in the 5:1 to 7:1 range. This helps getting a heavy load started, and during normal driving the gear is usually skipped.

It's not a choice to make, nor does it affect gameplay in any way. I do not believe that this feature would make the game more fun.

As for the usefulness of this suggestion. It probably isn't worth special coding. It could be simulated well enough by playing with your gear ratios. At the end of the day that's all it really us anyway.

From the suggestion guidelines

All features shalt be:
1. A key technical part of real life car/engine design, a major focus of real life engineers, not a small engineering chore.
2. An interesting design compromise. There have to be advantages and disadvantages to every choice in said gameplay mechanic.
3. A worthwhile trade-off considering both development effort and gameplay value.


It has 1 and 2.

They are considering adding load capacity for trucks and such, when/if it is implemented a granny gear would be an important factor.

I gave it a try already, the problem is the game spreads the gear ratios evenly, a granny gear is typically widely separated from the rest.

I have more of a truck/4X4 utilitarian background, Jakgoe obviously is more concerned with the hotrod/performance aspect of the game.

It's a reasonable suggestion, but only really makes sense for off road and towing of course. I wouldn't know where to put that option though, and even if there was space, there are more important things to put on that tab: first would be AWD power distribution and second, the flywheel mass. The effect you are talking about is achieved by the gear spacing slider though, which ties into several stat calculations and will have a big effect on the utility stat. That should cover the gameplay mechanic you have in mind.

I have the original on my phone right now and it was rude but there's no point arguing about it.

I have a rant lined up about how rude certain people are being towards certain new or not heavily active people on this forum but it'll just fall on deaf ears so I wont bother.
However, I will say this: Everyone here is an ambassador for this game and the way they treat newcomers can and will have a direct and non-insignificant effect on its overall success. People should be keeping that in mind when they speak to others.

isn't this gear pretty much the same as lowered gears in 4WD transfer case?

if so, then having a tick box for that and another gear ratio slider would make sense imho

My original post came out a bit ruder than I intended. I then edited it after Frankschtaldt pointed it out. He had a point, so there is no reason to get mad at him.

Alright, thanks for clearing that up, I didn't see your original post. Your edited response indeed seemed very neutral, so I didn't understand how one could have been agitated by that. A sorry to Frankschtaldt then.

It gets close, close enough for the game needs anyways.

Yes a transfer case with a low range can be used the same way, though most require stopping to shift in and out of 4low.

I have used 4low and a granny gear to move a 12,000 lb stalled farm vehicle with a 3,000 lb Jeep, made for one surprised farmer.

Thanks Jakgoe and apologies for jumping down your throat.

Now, in am effort to not derail this thread any farther..... I think this idea does have some merit, especially if towing and off-road capabilities will be measured in the game. Having said that, correct me if I'm wrong but the granny gear is a diesel thing isn't it? I don't ever recall seeing one in a petrol vehicle. If so, perhaps this could be penciled in as a feature to be included in the expansion that introduces diesels?

I like the idea of adding it to the diesel dlc, a similar idea might be a check box for a low range gearbox, have it modify your top speed number when calculating your towing stat. Say it reduces your top speed selection by 50-70% just when towing is calculated and in exchange adding weight and service cost to the car model.

I believe it was primarily sold in diesels, at least the more recent versions, though I think they were also sold with gas engine trucks as an option.
