More Valves?

I was wondering if it was ever a consideration to put pneumatic valves as an option in the ED? I know some super cars are heading towards that, and F1 has been for a while, I thought it would be a good thing to add to the game. It allows for much higher RPMs without valve float and is much smaller and lighter than using conventional camshafts and pulleys and belts.

Re: More Valves?

While this technology is really interesting and would be a good addition to the game, it does mean feature creep which we cannot allow to happen. :) Maybe an expansion about "future cars" could have that.
Cheers!

Re: More Valves?

So it's not likely this will make it into the base version? I mean I don't see how or why it would be so hard to implement into the game, but I'm also not in any way a game developer, so things like that may not be as apparent to me.

Re: More Valves?

One new tech = shitton of art that needs to be made, shitton of balance needed for all the current scenarios and multiplayer, shitton of research (obscure research, because not many production cars use this).

Re: More Valves?

Jupp, just a little feature like this on it's own is probably worth 6-8 weeks of work.

Re: More Valves?

And to remind the starter of this topic. The game is about production cars. Which production car does have the pneumatic valve system? ;)

Re: More Valves?

the only thing i can think of remotely close being used in production to pneumo-valves are hydro-electric valves, like BMW Valvetronic or Fiat Multiair

Re: More Valves?

The only hydraulic part of BMWs Valvetronic is the VVT (Vanos in BMW speak) actuator which is pretty standard, the actual continuous VVL is completely mechanical-electronic.

Also as long as the game has a hard coded redline of 12k, pneumatic valve springs will be pretty pointless

Re: More Valves?

So we're down to Fiat's MultiAir, which uses piezoelectric actuators and oil-filled coils to modify valve timing imposed by cam profile, and experimental camshaft-less Cargine Free Valve system developed jointly with Koenigsegg. I think this technology will become more popular in the near future so in a longer term adding it wouldn't be such a bad idea, especially when we already have such uncommon technologies as magnesium engine blocks.

To be honest, the thread's title is a bit misleading. I was hoping somebody came up with an idea of adding 6 valve per cylinder option as tested by Maserati in the eighties ;).

Re: More Valves?

As I said, I'm not a game dev or a programmer, so a lot of all this work that would be necessary to incorporate such technologies was not apparent to me, so thank you for clearing that up for me.
@spavatch As to the tread title, I'm sorry if the title was misleading, but I didn't really know what else to call it.

Re: More Valves?

@Racer13, don't take it too seriously, that's wasn't an issue, really ;).

Once we got to the MultiAir topic I started to wonder why there's no Inline-2 setup even in the stretch goal list. These were and - due to all that downsizing fuss - will be popular engines for the years to come, especially in small, inexpensive hatchbacks. Any chance of seeing them in Automation as well? :)
