Would it be possible to implement a tracker on the website home page/forum home page that lets players know how many players are in the multiplayer lobby, how many registered users are in the multiplayer lobby, and how many games are in progress? I don't think that his would be very hard to do.

Yes, that should be possible in some not-too-hard way. Not of the highest priority though, I could imagine this to be implemented before our Steam Early Access launch.
