I decided to start again with this new update, considering it had updates to the trims and all. i found the cars folder in my documents and decided to delete everything in there. now my cars won't save at all, i tab out while still on the menu screen and the car is there in game but not in the documents folder. ive tried unsubscribing from all the addons on the workshop, reinstalling the game, deleting the directory and reinstalling, clearing the cache and flushing the steam config and i still cant fix the issue. can anyone help me out?

Do you properly name your cars? There is a known issue of cars sometimes not saving when you let them have the default names.

they save, however, upon exiting the game and attempting to reload the car, it comes up with an lua error stating it 'failed to load body (a nil value)'

Does this happen when you after starting the game fresh build a new model with only one trim?
Another known issue is that trims in different years with the same name don't properly safe (fixed in the closed beta).
So what do you do in order to get this bug? Can you break it down to something really simple that we can reproduce?

i open the game, create a new model and a single trim, then exit to test if the issue persists. i also just recieved the same error message, but instead of it saying 'body' it says 'frontsuspension' is a nil value. im not using any workshop parts because they might have been causing some issues but if their fine, i would like to use them.

Did you finish making the car fully? So that it was tested and got its stats?

now its saying 'frontsuspension' is a nil value, not sure if ive fixed the body issue but i would like to use workshop parts if possible. ive seen a few posts reporting this, any ideas how to fix it?

Can you try naming Model, Trim, Family and Variant all on the final testing page, then pressing the save button?

Yeah, thats fixed it. Would using workshop parts make the body a nil value again or would it still work? Thanks for all your help, not many devs would be this helpful.

No worries about mods :) use whatever car you want. If the mod is proper then it works in game too.
Cheers!
