Supercharging a turbo engine (noob question)

I am fairly car illiterate but there is something I've always wondered about. What happens when you put turbochargers on a supercharged engine? From what little I know, a supercharger kicks in right off the bat but uses a fair amount of engine power, while a turbo kicks in later but does not use engine power.
Based on this assumption, could I use a supercharger to boost low end performance and a race turbo for the high end? I've got a feeling that this has some really obvious flaw that I'm missing because I don't know any cars that do this.
Thoughts?

Volkswagen has an engine that is built like that. 1.4 TFSI.

that's pretty much it, the supercharger gives low rpm boosts then with a clutch disengages it or it works in support of a turbo or turbos once it spools up. that will likely become old-tech once we get electric assist turbos to eliminate spool time, which are already in development. the flaws are cost, weight, size, maintenance, and complexity, all things that that factor pretty heavily against it. look up twincharged.

Thanks. Just for fun I plan to... twitchcharge... a mini clone and see if I can get it to go 200mph. :D

Ahh you are talking ingame, we'll keep your fingers crossed, the devs might put it in but most likely as post release dlc.

The first generation MR2 had something like that, last I recall. Pretty cool, if you ask me. 8-)

The 4agze in the mr2 had a small electric clutch, basically the same as on a air conditioner compressor, installed behind the supercharger pully that would allow the supercharger to disengage and free wheel under light engine loads.

The Lancia Delta Stradale was the first street car with turbocharger and supercharger in the same engine.

You mean Delta S4?

ANyway, it would be great if the game in the future allowed to twin-charge engines :)

A Danish car manufacturer did this, it did not end well for them when they appeared on top gear XD

The cars with turbo and supercharger in the same engine (in engineering is called Twincharger) are:

(the first car with this system) Lancia Delta S1 (both race and street versions).
Zenvo ST1.
1.4 VW TSI engines.
Nissan March Superturbo (or Micra Superturbo).
