Engineering Explained: The Pros And Cons Of Different Engine TypesI just thought this was an interesting article with videos for anyone who doesn't understand exactly what goes on with the engine. The explanations are pretty easy to understand.

Have these pros and cons been incorporated into the engine designer? For example is there a smoothness penalty when an I4 gets too large?

I believe they have, to some extent. They certainly apply in the scenario you propose.

hhmm, ok. I'm pretty sure I've seen 4.0 I4 engines that were a lot smoother than I thought.

A quick test with a 2014 I4 engine gets the following smoothness ratings
1549cc (79x79) = 63.2
2527cc (93x93) = 54.9
3849cc (107x107) = 45.3
5429cc (120x120) = 35.2 before it failed with RPM issues
the drop in smoothness being slightly bigger each time the size is increased
Similarly sized I6 versions get
85.2, 82.1, 78.8 & 75.1, just over a 10 point range compared to 28 point with the i4, with the largest i6 still being much smoother than the smallest i4

ah ok thanks for trying that. I haven't had a notebook for almost 3 months, will be getting it back from the service centre this week, so looking forward to trying out all the new content!
