Am I doing this wrong? Is there a better way?

So when designing an engine, I want to get the maximum size I can possibly fit. However, I constantly run into the issue of my engines just being too big.... So, I have to spend a lot of time, sizing them down, testing the new engine, saving, checking to see if it's still too big.. rinse and repeat.
Once I finally have something that works, now I have to do the same to get my turbo parts to their maximum size, rinse and repeat again... and then finally tweaking for best performance. (This is of course on my raw sports cars

)
So, is there a better way?

So the size-arrows are not working for you? If you design an engine from the engine manager that comes up after pressing the "choose engine" button in the model designer, you get a clear indication for what fits and what doesn't.

Rob I'm having a little similar problem about engine sizes too. Its when I choose AWD Drive Type. Some engines fit well but when I choose RWD and back to AWD it says the engine is too big.

AWD takes engine bay space, so it should not allow as big an engine as RWD.

But it accepts the engine normally. When I choose RWD and back to AWD it refuse the engine.

Because the centre differential wants some space too, and it takes that from the engine.
Unfortunately, these arrows the devs are speaking of are nowhere to be seen, so for the next update I hope we get a massive chassis that can even fit a redicolous 10.6 litre V8 just so it can be tried out and not rest on the bench.
For now though, like the OP I am stuck just trying it out and seeing how big an engine I can fit in there.

i think he is saying that the engine will fit with an AWD setup, then he will change it to RWD and it works, then he will change it back to AWD and it doesnt work. if that is the case then it is very odd

1-> Set Drive Type to AWD
2-> Choose the biggest engine possible.
3-> Set to RWD
4-> Try to set AWD again and it happen.
obs: Longitudinal placement but I think this occur on any type.

Okay, now I understand, yes that is a bug. Instead of saying it doesn't fit it should check if it still fits or not.

IMO Robert, the arrows are a bit too vague for me. In the earlier versions of the Beta, there were those green boxes and such, which showed which parts of the engine didn't fit and such. The arrows are aesthetically pleasant, but feels more like a trial and error to me. I don't actually have a solution that's both aesthetically pleasant and also functional, but just my two cents

In what way are they trial and error?

Sorry took me so long to reply, but yes, I've been missing using those arrows appropriately..... thanks

EDIT: I can also confirm that making some changes as others noted previously give weird results at times.. I'd have to try some things to give duplicat-able processes.

how hard would it be to add a toggleable option to switch between the arrows and the box, until a better solution is found?

The arrows were added because the box never really worked. We're not going back to that.

I dont know if its just me, but these cars dont have the engine bay space for a decent size motor no matter the config.
