Don't forget to also mention: "Ability to give 50% of what you pay to a publisher instead of the developer."

Which is exactly what this would mean. Steam is a bit better 30% fee as far as I know.

You can build your own game store. Just saying.

Excuse me? What does building a physical store have to do with microtransactions?

It may eventually end up in boxed copies in some markets, as we have been talking to a publisher who is willing to do some boxed distribution but leave us to do our own digital sales.
But yes, as Rob says, a lot less of the money ends up in our pocket to be spent on development, and a lot more goes to the publisher, the store and to the costs of physically making the DVDs/Boxes/shipping them to stores.

Instead of making DVDs for retail stores, why not just make cheap activation cards. You can download the game, but use the card purchased in store to activate it to full version.

But what would the company that did that for us take as a cut? Probably still quite a lot as they have to distribute it to stores all over the world, liase with stores to get it on the shelves etc.
It's not like we'd just run some cards off the printer and post them to games stores, It doesn't work like that

I don't see the benefit of boxed product at all. I prefer to buy my games online in a downloadable form. I wish that most of the money I lost purchasing the product will go straight to the developers and not to anyone else. If I can I'd really like to support and finance the developers and not some big world-wide gaming stores.
But if you could achieve more success then it might be an option but in my case it doesn't change anything. I've already bought it.

Some markets only really buy games in boxes, and for some of those markets we're going to talk to a publisher for boxed copies, but we'd much rather avoid it where possible. One thing that is nice about going with a publisher in some places is that they WILL do marketing on your behalf, so if it's selling in places where you'd have few digital sales anyway it could be pretty good.

Actually, I'd rather be interested in just a printable cover so we could use a "loose" DVD box and maybe print our own Automation installer CD.
That implies having a CD-compatible printer with corresponding CDs, but it would be a real fan goodie.

Something simliar to what minecraft has done, such as in-store cards and current online purcahes, and then expanding to CD if the sales are up to it.

I still don't really see how that would make good business sense for us.

I think the money spent to do this would be better served promoting the game via internet ads. buying ads on motor trend, google, etc...
