What exactly is your problem and which parts are you using? I don't want to give you a complete walkthrough, just a few hints.

I'm trying to get more lifespan out of my engine but I'm not getting much luck out of my 4999cc SOHC SPFI Aluminium V8... Have you got any tips?

SPFI is penalised in this scenario and limits lifespan because it is a very early application for that fuel system. In order to get more lifespan out of it, I'd advise you to choose a fuel system quality of about 7-8. If you then face cost problems, you could switch from SOHC to DAOHC, which will also make the engine lighter. You'll lose some power though.
