Another request for community help - Translation

Translation Update:
X probably indeed is a language on our "translations we need" list, so your help would be appreciated. The translation itself is hundreds of hours of work though, and hardly doable with a single person.

Also, we will not add /get started on further translations before we are in the final beta phase of the game, which still is some time off. So yeah, once we get started with the final beta phase, we'll assemble an X-Translation Team to work on that project, and you are welcome to join!

OK, it's been a while since I first started telling people this was going to happen soon. This time we're ready.

Basically, we need people to help us translate Automation. We've already had a couple of threads with people offering, and this is encouraging. But before anyone puts their hand up, be aware that there is a LOT of text in the game. To get an idea, here are the ones we have so far, at this early state of the game: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... XlnbS03VkE (yes, the Japanese is terrible - it was for testing)

Which languages are we after? Well, any that we can get our hands on. In answer to an issue that keeps coming up when this is discussed, yes, I'm aware that English, Spanish, Portuguese and French all have different versions either side of the Atlantic. We intend to do a US English version ourselves, though probably not till the end when all the text is finalised.

So far, the only language we've had direct requests for is Spanish (one for South American Spanish, others didn't specify).

Ideally, there'd be multiple translators for each language. Not only does this cut down the workload for each person, it means that people can verify each other's text (we can't pick up errors in text we can't read). Never underestimate the value of proof-reading :)

Interested? Read on:

The first thing to do is PM me with the following information:
The language you're offering to translate into
An email address that I can use to give you access to the Google spreadsheet

There's a legal document that I need people to sign and send back to me before I give them access. In summary, it states that the copyright to the translated text belongs to Camshaft Software, and that translators will be credited in the game.

The link above is the document we're using to do the translation/text editing work. Google lets us all edit at once, which saves us so much pain compared to my previous game translation experience (often it's all done in Excel or similar, making team efforts into nightmares). The strings are taken from the Google doc into the game strings file by hand, which adds another level of verification (there is always an actual person in between the google doc and the game) and also serves as a backup. As long as people stick to their own columns, we should be fine.

For translators, I've tried to make the colour coding as simple as possible. Basically, work in the yellow cells, and change them to green when they're done.

Re: Another request for community help - Translation

I'm looking forward to seeing if we get together enough people per language to get this done. :)
In its current form it takes about 6 man-weeks to translate. So if you get together a team of 3 people, it'll be done in 2 weeks time.

It is a huge responsibility though, and that cannot be understated: if you fuck up, you may destroy an entire market for the game.
That too is why we need more than 1 person per language, ideally 3-4. Also, you need to be at least really good at both English and
the language the translation is about - for obvious reasons.

Cheers guys! Let the applications come :)

Only language I'm comfortable to translate would be Romanian(not sure how much demand for it, though :D). I did study French and English so I could try and proofread other translations, if you want me to.

Re: Another request for community help - Translation

As I've posted in another Thread I could help with Spanish, the problem is that right now I couldn't spare more than 3-4 hours a week, maybe a bit more. Once I'm finished with my proyect this will increase a lot.

Re: Another request for community help - Translation

Feel like an absolute Forum no(o)b but can't seem to find the PM button  and this being my first post doesn't help save much face either ;).

Just spent some time playing the demo and my what an amazing game you guys are developing. It's the biggest thing i've seen since SR3 with the difference being that Automation isn't broken and doesn't forget to include the fun even in this early beta stage! Don't get me wrong though i don't want to talk bad about the SR3 people as they are doing an amazing job as well but truth be told it just isn't in the same league this game is. I see the same greatness in this team i saw back in the early days with the DICE people and we all know what happened to them! A good piece of software can go a long way and i think (and hope) this one will explode if the quality can be maintained.

Anyway to the point, i can do dutch. I'm fluent in English read/write/speak. I'm a single nerd with way to much time on my hands and want to be part of this before it goes ubi and i miss out on the 40k signing bonuses  .
no seriously i just like the challenge and would genuinely enjoy the whole process even though it's hard work. It's satisfying to be able to be part of something and help create towards a unified goal.

I know the post is old so sorry if this has been moved or reopened under a different thread.
If you feel my help is welcome sent me a private message and i'll provide the requested personal information.

Re: Another request for community help - Translation

I guess for Danish we would have a team leader too, as T16 is a Dane. On the other hand... so many people in Denmark know English very well, a lot of work would be done for reaching a relatively small non-English speaking audience.

This is much different for French though! We really need that asap. So keep them coming. :)
