Re: Help us out: Engine Designer Demo - Scenarios

Scenario description:
The year is 1982. The DeLorean Motor Company is on the verge of bankruptcy. The CEO, John DeLorean, is feverishly seeking out investors. But without a viable product to sell, few investors are making the leap of faith. The DMC-12 is being heavily criticized for it's lack luster performance from it's sluggish wart engine conceived by a Purge-Renault-Volvo joint venture. John has decided that in order to entice more investors and and banks into sending cash, he needs a car that will be the talk of the town.

Part of his marketing strategy is to provide a car that is cheaper to make while still being all that the DMC-12 was supposed to be when first introduced. He wants an I4 engine that must be more powerful and more economical than the current V6 leper.

Technical limitations:
  • 2,849cc max. capacity
  • All other period appropriate technologies allowed.

Technical specifications:
  • Must have power greater than w (40%)
  • Must cost less than x (30%)
  • Must have economy greater than y (15%)
  • Must have emissions lower than z (15%)

For reference the engine that power the dmc-12 had 97kw (130hp) & 208nm (153ft-lb) I want it to be more than that.

Re: Help us out: Engine Designer Demo - Scenarios

Eventually yes, but to start with, just inline 4s.

When we release V8s (which is the first bit of extra demo content) we'll need 16 scenarios to go with them, but for now we just need ones for the inline 4s

Oh.

Well I wanted to use V8's in my scenario...I thought it was just inline-4's and V6's.

Re: Help us out: Engine Designer Demo - Scenarios

Nah, it'll release with I4s only, then V8s once they're done (pretty soon) and more engine types after that as we finish them

Re: Help us out: Engine Designer Demo - Scenarios

Scenario description:
Welcome back to 2001, SAAB are closing in on completing there second generation model of the 9-3 Saloon. 2 Design teams have been chosen to each develope a 2 litre engine with just over 200 BHP. The 1st Design team has gone for using the GM Ecotec engine with a turbo, producing a very resonable 207 BHP. The engine block is cheaper to build but the turbo puts the price up quiet abit, and the large turbo suffers from turbo lag! Can you the lead designer of the 2nd Design team produce the same power without the turbocharger but for the same cost?

Technical limitations:
1,998CC capacity.
Naturally aspirated only.
All other period appropriate technologies allowed.

Technical specifications:
Must have power the same or greater than w (35%)
Must cost the same or less than x (30%)
The economy can be slightly worse than y (15%)
The emissions can be slightly worse than z (20%)

Re: Help us out: Engine Designer Demo - Scenarios

in the sixties city car were the rage in japan, on the long tail of the post war automotive incentives that promoted the sales of kei cars.

one of the most notable hits at that time was the Mazda Carol, a 1962 car with a full 4 stroke, 4 cylinder engine within the 0.360L limit for the kei car category imposed by the government.

Now the Mazda executives want to make a sport coupe of their hit, the Mazda Carol-R. You'll need to make an engine that squeeze out more performance than the basic version but still respectful of the state mandated restrictions.

Engine size: less than 0.360L (15%)
Engine power: more than 13kW (85%)

Technical limitations:
Naturally aspirated, Carburettors only, Cast Iron only, 1.5L (1500cc) max. capacity, must run 85 octane (or lower) fuel, no electronic ignition

Technical specifications:
a) Low end torque more than (50%)

Re: Help us out: Engine Designer Demo - Scenarios

the motorbike division of the suzuki corp. requires an engine to create a successor of the gsx1400 lineup, and having no experience on line fours engines want to recycle one out of the suzuki car division.

this engine needs to get on the underbelly of the premium suzuki chassis so it has to be both lightweight and powerful. more than the previous model, at least.

power: more than 80kw (70%)
weight: less than 85 kg (30%)

additional restrictions apply: oil cooling, three way catalytic converter and exhaust muffler; no racing headers (for space constraints).

Just wait and see what people come up with when the engine list is expanded beyond I4's  I've already got a couple of ideas brewing and I'm sure others do too.
