Holy Toledo Pt 2: Passing the Baton [REVIEWS POSTED]

Holy Toledo! (Design Challenge)

The late 70's saw new contracts, large and small, for Toledo Ironworks. But times change, and as the 80's dawn, Toledo has to decide how best to prepare for the future.

Once again they have put out the call to car manufacturers to get a feeling for where their engines fall in the realm of consumer desire. Once again they have made an extensive catalog available, this time with 4 flavors of the old tried-and-true Toledo V6, and 3 displacements of the brand new, technologically advanced Toledo Trivalve 4-cylinder.

Once again, it is time for your engineers and marketing folks to choose what works best for them, and put it on the market.

Does long-standing carburetor technology on a V6 still have a place? Will a small fuel-injected engine win the day? Or will it be somewhere in between?

Rules:
1. Design year (all trims/tabs must match): 1982.
2. MUST use one of the engines from the attached ZIP below.
3. NO modifications to ANY tabs or settings in the engine designer.
4. May submit up to 2 vehicles, but they must compete in separate categories (see below)
5. Tires must be quality 0, no semi-slicks.
6. Limited production body/chassis parts ARE allowed, but ONLY for the Sporty category.
7. VANILLA CONTENT ONLY. No Steam mods/bodies allowed.

Scoring:
All entries will compete head-to-head against other entries in the same Category (outlined below). The vehicle's Design Score will be the average of the Competitiveness score for the category's two main demographics as calculated in the market tabs. This will have a little twist, however. Your scores for BOTH Gasmea and Fruinia will be averaged as well, and the margin depends on which category your submission is competing in. In essence...

Design Score = (((Gasmea Competitiveness A + Gasmea Competitiveness B)/2) + ((Fruinia Competitiveness A + Fruinia Competitiveness B)/2))/2

The top 1-2 competitors in each category will get a full review, with everyone else getting a short blurb.

Categories, Markups:
Each category is graded by its Competitiveness in the following market demographics, at the listed markup.

Sporty: Fun, Sport Budget. 12% markup.
Entry Level: City, Family Budget. 5% markup.
Upscale: Family Premium, Commuter Premium. 15% markup.
Ute: Utility, Offroad. 10% markup.

There will also be one category that doesn't have a scoring system, and completely subjective. ALL cars are automatically entered into this.

WTF: My personal favorite odd-ball design. Could be something that tries to span too many categories, or something that does exceedingly well in a demographic not listed here.

Submission:

In the Model Name field in the car designer, please put your board nick. In the trim, you may put the model and trim name for your creation. Export the car and PM it to me. In the PM, please give me the manufacturer/model/trim name and the category in which it is going to compete.

Example:
Townsend Tassel 4, Entry Level
Townsend Trigger, Sporty

First official entries are in. C'mon and let's get more. :) This is very similar to the last Holy Toledo challenge, except with more options available. And remember, you can submit up to two entries, as long as they are in different categories!

Presenting my entries for this design challenge...

1. Bogliq Mouse GLi

HTP2-Mouse.png
HTP2-Mouse.png (500.72 KiB) Viewed 105389 times

Taking advantage of tax credits offered by Toledo Ironworks home state; Bogliq Automotive USA presented the American public with a Toledo powered version of their Mouse world car. Although this was done on sound financial grounds, the production development director had a personal friendship with the Toledo Ironworks director dating from when Bogliq USA was struggling to compete in a national US racing series for 5 litre and 2 litre sedans. The help provided by the Toledo director was instrumental in many early Bogliq tuning breakthroughs and the Bogliq director chose to repay this kindness with a large engine supply contract...

2. Bogliq Fox (USDM)

Another world car re-engined with Toledo power, it was felt that American engines would aid acceptance (and score tax concessions, ) with the US buying public. Bogliq Automotive was glad to take on the extra supply of powerplants as they were looking to improve production in ways which shared the wealth among all manufacturers, not just themselves. Bogliq Automotive would merely supply any cars they couldn't sell to their African division so there was never any major issues of stock over-supply!

Re: Holy Toledo Pt 2: Passing the Baton [OPEN]

Here's some hopefully not too cheesy eighties advertising!

Image

Bit of a story behind these two cars. These were the final pre-production concepts for the Mk 4 Merna and the Mk 1 Berlose, both of which would be released in 1983. Seeing as not everything was quite done yet, they borrowed some engines for testing from Toldeo as they were fairly equivalent to the ones Erin had on the way for the final versions.

Since everyone is posting ads I think I should show what people are up against

This AD took me a whole 5 minutes

Love the ads, CadillacDave...

So I'm going to have to revisit the submissions again at a later time. My copy of Automation is currently broken, and simply uninstalling and reinstalling is not fixing it right now.

lol cadillacdave

A+ for effort
gr8 m8 i r8 8/8.
but if you do it often enough, it could become a signature of yours....
just saying.

and i suggest trying GIMP or Paint.NET
both are free, and provide better features, but nowhere as complex as photoshop :)

Re: Holy Toledo Pt 2: Passing the Baton [OPEN]

well then. i have no hope of ever doing what asdren or strop or squidhead are doing, at least not in the near future.

then try using simple the simple stuff that looks sophisticated :) like gradients background, or outlining highlight.

remember that ad?
that seems simple right?
3 layers, background, car, gradient layer, in that order.

yet that alone almost took me 1 hour to figure out :P

I'll probably experiment more in between competition entries, It took me a while working out how to select the whole car with the magic wand tool and now I know how I have just stuck with using it
