A note from Weiler Motor Company Engineering Department in regards to engine sourcing with project 'PE' ...

"...and while I understand in full why this contract is very lucrative to the company as a whole.
I am uncertain as to just what actually needs to be done.

While we have tailored 2 budget variants of our AR/AV-4 25 motors for 2 of the models, and developed a 1.6L OHV motor for the standard package, these were done per several reasons.

As you know of the modular engine program, which is in stage 2 as stage 3 is months from early test, the purpose is to construct engine blocks for varying purposes, and both engines in the sport and delux variants have produced considerable results.

Our chief concerns include if what is current, can properly stack up with the competition.

While our motors are reliable even when built our budgets, there has been a concern for fuel economy. We are running out of time and I need to know if economy is our absolute goal, or a proper balance of performance, economy and usability.

I will be eager to hear your reply within the next 12 hours.

It should be noted that the engines which have been test fitted into the NE.2 have been in no way modified over the standard production units used in today's LHE lineup, which allows us to sell them to you at such a low price. While we strive to build exceptionally reliable engines, breakdowns are unavoidable, and with the XM families nearly complete interchangeability of parts, acquiring parts, whenever needed, is exceedingly simple. at first. our engineer tried to meddle with the already existing engine. but they just cannot get anything that's satisfactory for them.
not changing the bores and lining, not even turbo. they blamed it on the valvetrain. maybe it's just old tech, or maybe they just haven't worked much with it so they don't know what to do with it.

we end up doing an overhaul on the engine. so much things done they it can almost be said it was designed from scratch.

using the same block, they changed the cylinder lining to a heavier alloy but a more solid ones. the coolant flow paths is being redone, the ECM and injection systems are also changed for more efficiency. the block heads are fully design from the ground up. but only at this point that someone realised they f*cked up. this is not a one off engine, we're supposed to be mass producing this engine.

so after wasting money and time, they finally just designed one from scratch that uses some of the components being used from the original engine, and some of the measurements too, for cost cutting and making up time that they lost.

this is what we end up with. 1.9l DOHC 8v inline 4 engine with good reliability, efficiency, and acceptable performance.

15 entrants. 20 engine families. 43 engine variants. It pleases me enormously that this simple format attracted so much interest.

The Peppermint Automobile Company will, of course, have many factors to weigh in deciding what engine to buy - how far do they need to be shipped? will the supplier still be in business in five years? how hard will it be to train the mechanics at Peppermint's dealerships on maintenance procedures? and so on - but before asking any of those questions, they have to decide which engines most attract their interest. So, without further ado:

Results

In the Standard category, the winning engine is the Standard variant of cpufreak101's VI-150 with 48 points, ahead of conan's Mitsushita 4J2Z-GG at 42.5 and vmo's Montes 634-I at 39 - congratulations to you.

In the Deluxe category, the winning engine is Lordred's LHE X8M E85T with 45.5 points, ahead of koolkei's CE Lux at 43 and the Deluxe variant of Puffster's ABR Peppermint at 41 - congratulations to you.

In the Sport category, the winning engine is the Sport variant of Puffster's ABR Peppermint at 42, ahead of vmo's Montes VE394-TT at 41 and the tie between the Sport variant of cpufreak101's VI-150 and High Octane Love's Bogliq 8BE40S at 40 - congratulations to you.

Winning the Single-Supplier category with 121.5 points is Lordred - congratulations!

The winner of the One-Block category, and second place in the Single-Supplier category, is cpufreak101 with 115.5 points, followed by conan with 112.5 points and Puffster with 112 points. Additionally, VicVictory gets an Honorable Mention for scoring 105 points using only two engine variants between the three trims, placing fourth in both Standard and Deluxe with the Taurus Phase 3 TB8-E. Congrants to all of you.

Finally, the sole entrant in the In-House category is simo4295, who through heroic effort and a complete disregard for engine lifespan managed to produce 42 points. Calculation Sheets

As you can see, the calculations for this competition were quite simple. That's not to say that I didn't manage to introduce a bug into the spreadsheet anyway, because I absolutely did (it was in the calculation of tied results, for the record), but all things considered, this was a pretty straightforward process.

The spreadsheet itself is broken out into eight sheets. The first four cover the competition between all entrants - one sheet for each trim and one sheet for the combined categories. The second four sheets add the old 1982 Peppermint 1.2L Electro drivetrain from the NE-1 for comparison. (It would hypothetically have placed between Riso and simo4295 at 73 points: tied with simo4295 at 24 in Standard, between cpufreak101 and Riso at 22 in Deluxe, and between Rossriders and CadillacDave at 27 in Sport.)

This was definitely a fun learning experience for me - I hope to build off it to run more and better competitions in the future. And if anyone wants to employ a similar formula for their own competition, feel free to adapt these sheets to that end.

Edit: Oh, and thanks again to Lordred for more Stupid High Resolution Helplining - I have to admit, I giggled like a fiend at the thought of sending him his own freaking entry for photographing.
