Formula Automation - 1990 Formula One Season

Formula Automation – 1990 Formula One
Sponsored by Hyperion Racing
Welcome to a tournament called Formula Automation. I hope to make this a series, with slightly different restrictions, cars, and rules each tournament, but I don’t know if I will or should. However, let’s get to it, here are some rules and information. For this league, you must build an F1 car from the 1990 season. However, unlike most tournaments, I have a unique opportunity between races. You are allowed to tune your car, with a week to work on it. There are some rules for your tunes, as well as rules for your cars, so let’s look at them.

Rules
1. The engine must be Naturally Aspirated.
2. You must have Semislick Tires.
3. You can utilize one 15 quality per section, as in one for Model, one for Engine, and one for Trim. Outside of that, quality must remain at 5 or below. This also applies to the negatives, so if you have one -15, then you can’t have a 15, and vice versa.
4. Don’t abuse glitches or hacks.
5. The car must be from the year 1990.
6. You must have Advanced Safety.
7. Reliability on your engine must be at least 25, the car itself must have at least 40 reliability.
8. The body must be from 1980 or newer.
9 The Community Modpack IS allowed.

Tuning Rules
1. You cannot completely replace the engine or body.
2. You cannot modify materials. Exceptions are the wheels and interior.
3. Modifying quality is not allowed.
4. You cannot replace the gearbox or differential, but you can modify top speed, speed per gear, and front-back application of power.

Rules Broken
If you break an entry rule you will be allowed to resubmit your car. If you break a tuning rule and send me a fixed submission before the race, I will allow you to enter. However, if you don’t, then you will get a DNF which amounts to an automatic 0 points that week. If your tune breaks the standard rules, the same exact punishment will follow, DNF unless you resubmit.

Scoring
Multiple points shall be factored in, let’s look at these points. Just so we know, the Top Speed, 0-60 times, and Sportiness will be calculated based upon Week 1 and the Final Week, meaning you can earn up to 50 points from these alone.
Positioning
Points for positioning will be determined by the driver count.
Challenges
Each week will have a unique challenge worth 5 points. Whoever comes in first on this challenge wins.

Races
I’m sure this is an exciting moment, because we’re discussing the races in the series! Just so it’s known, races will be held every Saturday, giving you from Sunday to Friday to tune your car and send me a tuned car. If the race is postponed, I’ll try to tell you, but I may be unable to.
Week 1 – Green Hell – Speed Challenge
Week 2 – Pike’s Peak – Torque Challenge
Week 3 – Circuit de LaSarthe – Reliability Challenge
Week 4 – Road Atlanta – Weight Challenge
Week 5 – Circuit de Mocano – Horsepower Challenge
Final Week – Special Round

Final Week
+Before I start, the final week is 100% optional, and you do not have to participate. You can participate in one but not the other as well.
+The final week is unique, in multiple ways. For one, there isn’t a traditional positioning run. Rather, it’s a betting run. At the Automation Test Track, you can put down points, and they will be divided up. The formula will be worked on once we have a full cast. The league will also offer a number of points equal to the drivers participating in this event.
+For two, the challenge is a Beat the Stig challenge. Over at the Automation Airfield track, you can race against the Stig. There is no base time yet. For every second under the Stig’s time, you get a point, but for every second over it, you lose a point.
+I’ll try to get a base time and equation for these events by Week 1, but at the latest it’ll be Week 3.

How to Submit
Send me a message on the forums with the appropriate lua or a link to it. Please use the naming format. The week is for the Tune, also the Final Week would be Week6 in the format.
Format: Username-Week-Car-Model, Username-Week-Car-Trim, Username-Week-Engine-Family, Username-Week-Engine-Tune
Example: Neon00-Week1-Car-Model, Neon00-Week1`-Car-Trim, Neon00-Week1-Engine-Family, Neon00-Week1-Engine-Tune
Smartass titles will be ignored, and if you try to claim that you did it right, you will not receive any mercy from me.If you made a mistake or accident, you are allowed to resubmit.

Accepted Applications
This will be closed either the 15th of May or when we get 30 drivers, whichever comes first.

I think it's essentially Group 5 touring car racing - closed-wheel production-lookalikes.

Re: Formula Automation - 1990 Formula One Season

Sadly you can't actually get Fomula One bodies, but what I'm more-so aiming for is the engine restrictions (minus the 3.5 liter rule) and such.

Also, it would probably be closer Group 5 or Group 6 but neither of these events took place in 1990.

Re: Formula Automation - 1990 Formula One Season

Looks like a relatively unrestricted all out racing tournament, which immediately piques my interest. I'm going to see how the scoring unfolds first (of course if the scoring needs participants then I might as well try to kick things off).

Quick question: what's the weight challenge? Points for heaviest, or lightest?

Also, would it be easier to say that for each section, quality on every tab should remain between -5 to 5 inclusive, except for one tab in which quality is unrestricted? I think I got what you said but it confused me at first!

From Packbat Auto Works, we present the 1990 Molossidae Race Car:

(The engine almost fits, but I couldn't figure out a pleasant way to reshape the hood to get rid of the last little bit of clipping. I am happy with the opening for the air intake, though!)

Yeah, some of these engines, the intakes look awesome but don't fit... that, however, is one rather nice way to deal with it! Looks well wicked, like it got lost on the way to Summernats :P

Thank you! That's something of what I had in mind when I came up with it - that and, "well, darn, none of these bonnet bumps are high enough." :P

Final question:

Also no restrictions on engine volume (displacement)?

The only rules are the ones listed, if it ain't listed, it ain't a rule, so you can use the biggest engine you can slap under the hood.

No problem. I am using sensible engine size, just wanted to know if I was going to be heading up against twenty-nine 10.3L engines. hahaha
