In the small 1980's mid-engined car (one of my favourite cars in the game), you can mount a 3.3 l i6 if you mount it traverse and use MacPherson struts instead of double wishbones. :) Most mid-engined cars with larger engines have V or boxer layouts, though.

I'll try to aim for 5-6 liter V8 with the largest turbo options in the engine bay. Might be hard to cool down an engine that size, though.

As long as the engine is a road legal one, the chassie is deemd sound, and the power/weight ratio is lower than 15kW/100kg, then you can register a car as "Amateur Built"(sp?). No matter what it is built to resemble. Replica or otherwise.
