Re: Custom Badges

I was wondering if you could take a 3d model and convert that into a badge. I specifically made it to be a badge (design, model, uvs).

Re: Custom Badges

Okay, I got my badge working, it took awhile. Without a good explanation on how the uvmesh system works in Automation (and probably in addition a good explanation on how 3ds max works as well), I wasn't able to cut a nice jackrabbit shaped hole to fit my jackrabbit shaped badge into.

So you instead get two small square "attachment" dots, I like to call them. But it works, example, and download. I am not sure if a thumbnail was suppose to be autocreated, but it never was, so I just made one myself instead.

This is all probably pretty low quality, but given how much of the dumb I have when using 3ds max (vs say Maya), it turned out okay in my opinion.

Making this was a very interesting experience. My development chain went something like this, PaintTool SAI -> Inkscape -> (svg to eps converter) -> Maya -> 3DS Max (on a friend's computer) -> Automation

That looks really good! That inspires me to get my own! (Or maybe bribe somebody into doing some for me... With money? :D )

Re: Custom Badges

I'm not one for begging, but nothing would make a better Christmas present than taking my badge into the game. :)

Re: Custom Badges

Oh that wasn't there when I last looked, or i'm not very observant (which is certainly possible). But that doesn't suit my technique at all, unless I want to split it into pieces (crown, inner, outer ring) and then convert those into separate model pieces.

I might consider doing it, since that image doesn't look quite high quality enough to just map as a texture, but that's a bit of work, since I would have to redraw each piece by hand first.

Re: Custom Badges

Don't act like remaking his badge is a lot of work :P. I can do that in 20 minutes if you want.;)

Re: Custom Badges

I almost have my own badge working in the game, at which point I'll also add it to my company thread, and probably as my avatar too. :)

Re: Custom Badges

Don't make it sound so easy either, because it's really not. Anyway I like to go for a little bit more detail then that.

Anyway, it's mostly irrelevant, since I won't have access to 3DS Max again until after the holidays (28th or later). But I do have Maya.

But here is the fbx (a general cross program autodesk format) for this badge.

Re: Custom Badges

Well done! Looks good! I had to rush mine in just 30 minutes.
I think it still could use some smoothing around the edges.

Re: Custom Badges

Well, a bit of chamfer would surely look nice. It could be argued that for a model as small as a badge it's not really needed, but there is all sort of detailing going on the crown already, so...

I'm in love! Thank you so much, that was very nice of all of you!

It doesn't seem to be working for me. I get that start-up error indicator.
