Gearbox Designer

Kubboz asked for an update in the chat.

So here is my exciting gearbox designer. Cruise speed is How many K's this box (paired with a diff) should be doing in top gear at 5500 rpm.

Other stuff should be self explanatory I hope.

Ohh neat! This looks like you are putting in lots of good stuff there :) The cruising speed of 250 km/h is most excellent too xD well, fitting for that 1000kW+ car you built there (1.5% = 15.9 kW)
Would be awesome if you could have one more option in there: As you can "only" adjust the final drive ratio, would it be appropriate to have the choice between "sports ratios", "sporty ratios", "normal ratios" and "economical ratios"? I mean that's probably more of an effect than having a sixth gear :)

Great work guys!

Nope. The 15.9 kilowatts is how much power is always lost through the transmission (almost a figure of how much it takes to run the transmission and diff), the 1.5% is how much on top of that. So a 1000kw engine would have a base loss of 15.9 kilowatts + another 15kw due to the stresses exherted on it. Hope that makes sense?

This is more to cover Auto's, with lose power more as a percentage through the torque converter, and manuals who don't lose much over just the friction within the box.

Looks really great.

Going to create a mod including gearboxes with multiple reverse gears.

Wow! I love it! Much more there than I even hoped for. :D I'm curious also about an option for a performance transmission ratios, luxury, etc. Would be great for ultra smooth luxury cars, super high performance supercars, and very effienent "eco friendly" cars to compliment their respective engines (made in that awesome engine designer ;) )

How about an all wheel drive? or do you guys already have that planned?

I did see it posted elsewhere AWD/4WD was planned :)

I know, i see the 4WD. But AWD is different, sending power to select wheels at different times and not all the power to all the wheels all the time, and it should effect the market in a different way as you would want AWD on a minivan and 4WD on an SUV or truck.

4WD taken from the offroad ability, AWD see forum viewtopic.php?f=15&t=137

"Front wheel, rear wheel and all wheel drive configurations."

Will you able to adjust individual gears in the final version? I assume the graph will show RPM and MPH/KPH eventually. It would also be good to show maximum speed in each gear in the following format:

1st: 40 mph
2nd: 60 mph
3rd: 86 mph
4th: 112 mph

...and so on.

The graph already shows speed and crank rpm. ;) And the maximum speed in each gear would require it to know the redline rpm off the engine you plan to mount it to, which it doesn't, but you could just look at the graph.

As for the ability to change individual gear ratios I don't think that will be in game, but maybe the ability to adjust the difference between ratios if the devs can find a user friendly way to implement it.

It's been stated a few times individual ratios will not be adjustable. The only gear potentially adjustable would be the final drive.

So will the final drive gear adjustment just be like a top speed vs acceleration slider?

The gearbox designer isn't fully nailed down so the exact way things will work in the end subject to change, but that is overall the one of the ideas that's going around yes.

I think a advanced tab would be good giving people the easy and obviously advanced options when designing a gearbox. This is obviously only going to matter if the guys implement gear ration changes...
