the yj is cheaper but if you need a lot of articulation for say rockcrawling the tj would be a better choice

Can go litteraly anywhere, sturdy and easy to work on. Besides, there's tons of surplus ones overflowing the Swedish market if you dig a little. Just be carefull when going around bends or driving in inclines. The tip over faster than a Reliant Robin!
Something else to look at would be the old Suzuki SJ's. Much the same pros and cons as the Valp. If you find one's that not rusted to pieces, take good care of it. I have a suspicion they will become proper cult classics one day.
If you find any old G-wagons or Land Rovers for a low price, I'd advice you to avoid them. They're high maintenance, and will start costing you a lot more than the other options when you start using them.
