Would it be possible to make rims with several materials (similar to other fixtures)? This would allow for a wider range of rim styles -- and chrome wheels would also add a more realistic feel to old cars.

Um what? There's steel, alloy, magnesium, and carbon fiber rim options depending on year already.

He's talking about the visual aspect, right now wheels can only have a single, grey material/texture.

I talked with pyrlix via PM the other day, because i wanted chrome Tofu Wheels. Rims can only have 3 materials right now. A black matte finish, the current grey one and a brighter grey for the bolts.

The light grey could be nice for the appearance of alloy wheels, since that's their usual colour. I agree that a choice of wheel colours, and more styles, would be a nice addition in the future.
