Cross-Market Appeal Challenge

(Don't worry - not a real competition)

I was feeling the itch to build a new car in Automation, and I came up with a silly idea: build a car to compete in two market categories, chosen completely at random. Basic rules are as follows:

  1. Choose two random categories off the list of all 60 market categories (shown below, up-to-date as of Build 151002).
  2. Choose a random year between 1940 and 2020.
  3. Build a car to the highest Competitiveness score you can in both categories. (50 = pass, 70 = good pass, 90 = excellent pass).
List of categories:
  Code:
 1. Offroad Budget
 2. Offroad
 3. Offroad Premium
 4. Offroad Utility
 5. Heavy Utility

 6. Family Utility Budget
 7. Family Utility
 8. Family Utility Premium
 9. Utility Budget
10. Light Delivery

11. Utility Sport Budget
12. Utility Sport
13. Utility Sport Premium
14. Utility
15. Delivery

16. Commuter Budget
17. Commuter
18. Commuter Premium
19. Utility Premium
20. Heavy Delivery

21. Family Budget
22. Family
23. Family Premium
24. City Premium
25. City Eco

26. Family Sport Budget
27. Family Sport
28. Family Sport Premium
29. City Budget
30. City

31. Fun Budget
32. Fun
33. Fun Premium
34. Pony Budget
35. Pony

36. Light Sport Budget
37. Light Sport
38. Light Sport Premium
39. Muscle
40. Muscle Premium

41. Track Budget
42. Track
43. Track Premium
44. Sport Budget
45. Sport

46. Convertible Sport Budget
47. Convertible Sport
48. Convertible Super
49. Super
50. Hyper

51. Convertible Premium
52. Convertible
53. Convertible Budget
54. Convertible Luxury
55. GT

56. Premium Budget
57. Premium
58. Luxury
59. Luxury Superior
60. GT Premium

I've only played it once, but it was interesting: I rolled Commuter Budget + Light Sport Premium in 1953, and built a rear-engined track-day car that barely squeaked out a pass. But I thought others might enjoy it as well.

(I used random.org to generate the numbers for the categories and year, but you can use whatever method you prefer.)

Edit 2015-12-04: In Build 151204, Utility Sport Budget (#11 on the list) was removed and Utility Sport Luxury added after Utility Sport Premium.

That's a pretty cool challenge. Good way of practicing the game mechanics. :)

Using Random.org, I got City Premium and Utility Budget in the year 1983. I will begin building soon, but this might be hard, but also fun!

Sounds cool.

I rolled Pony and Utility Sport Premium in 1994. I'm gonna give it a shot!

Family sport budget and GT premium... in 1941.

I think there weren't even enough competitors in the demographics in that time for the results to make much sense! (Saved by the ridiculous year... otherwise oh man that would have sucked so bad. Can you imagine how hard that one would be if I rolled 2015???)

I'll roll again.

EDIT: 24, 54, 1971. It's like making the Top Gear guys trying to make the Espace a convertible.

52 Convertible
10 Light Delivery

Hmmm. Is there even a convertible available for that year yet?

This is surprisingly fun! :)

I got lucky with my first try, a 41 and 25, Track Budget City Eco in 1964. A nice 1-litre Sprite achieved in Gasmean Market 100 competitiveness in Track Budget and 70.5 in City Eco. Perhaps next time I'll get those illogical stuff you guys are getting frequently.

EDIT: And again! I got lucky with my second try, a Track Premium GT in 1970. I made a mid engine 2-litre Inline 6 car with 180hp which achieved over 80 competitiveness in both categories in Gasmea and Fruinia. (100 Competitiveness in Track Premium in Gasmea).

how do i do this????? i meant how do i generate the numbers?

and... maybe this would fit into the challenge subforums.... as a CHALLENGE, not as a competition..

as in nobody has to judge or review anything. more like a sharing thread.

@koolkei: What I did was use the random.org widget three times - the first two times with Min 1, Max 60 to generate the two categories (I suggest rerolling repeats) and the third time with Min 1940, Max 2020 to generate the year.

Re: which subforum: it's a judgment call. If the mods want to move the thread, I'd be fine with that.

family utility budget and pony budget in... 1947...
EDIT: it's kinda a crap choice in both markets, but i got 40.6 competitiveness with 101 desirability in pony budget and 36.9 competitiveness with 146 desirability in family utility budget

well i went again, this time light sport and light delivery (made me think of takumi's gt86) in 2009

....

City Budget and Fun Premium in 1965

Let's do this!

EDIT: Success! I built an odd looking sedan packed with a 2.... something, iirc it was a 2.7 liter, inline 6, so damn slow it can only go to around 95mph, and it's gonna take a week to get there, thanks to the 3-gear automatic. Luckily rust will put an end to its misery in a few decades, or less. I got a 51 in City Budget, and 66 in Fun Premium, in Gasmea, yeah, it was tough, especially with my body choice, a bit too big for a City Budget, i think that the smaller, European-ish one might have done better.
I'm definitely going to try this out again, pretty fun little challenge

@cpufreak101: That sounded like a pretty good pair of categories to me, actually - I was able to get 70+ Competitiveness in both pretty straightforwardly. I think the keys are -15 quality on the body for cheapness and solid axle suspension for weight capacity.

(I also discovered why Heavy Duty Cast internals are available, thanks to the 3.3L inline-four I built! This car rumbles like an earthquake.)
